Aſter surgery, the hospital stay consists of busy, work-filled days. Rehabilitation helps patients increase their functional capabilities. Terapists involve both the patient and his or her family in education and preparation for a safe, successful return home. Patients learn how to get in and out of bed and a chair and use stairs, for example. On the rare occasion that a patient is not able to go home in the typical three to four days, Community Memorial has a recently expanded inpatient rehabilitation unit, which provides comprehensive rehabilitation and nursing services to patients.

For those who need subacute care at a facility before going home, the staff will help patients arrange it. Gundrum had the benefit of having his wife, Claudie, to help him with his care at home during his recovery. For those who need home care services, Community Memorial works with the patient to line up a home care professional to assist them.

Before going home, patients are advised regarding their medications, such as anticoagulants, instructed on how to use special supplies, and shown how to do exercises at home that will aid in their recovery.
