reast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. The most important
factor affecting breast cancer risk is age. With ageing societies, the numbers continue to rise. Early detection is key in fighting the disease, since the outlook is positive if breast cancer is detected early enough.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS SURVEY To determine what women knew about breast cancer and early detection, the German market research institute Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK) conducted an international survey on behalf of Siemens. More than 4,000 women between
25-65 years old, from Austria, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Russia, Sweden, and the U.S., participated in this online survey. It indicated that on average 82% of the respondents consider breast cancer screening to be very important.

When it came to their knowledge about breast cancer, a total of 80% considered themselves to be at least sufficiently informed and 41% rated their knowledge as good or very good. Still, 19% stated they had no, or deficient knowledge. Furthermore, almost half did not know whether there is an official screening programme in their country. This shows that there is room for improvement. Overall, about half of the women go to breast cancer screening once a year, with the percentages being highest in Brazil (73%) and lowest in Russia (31%). The majority of women in the survey rely on their gynecologist as the main and most trustworthy source of information. Based on the results, Siemens started
a new global awareness campaign to inform the public further. This campaign aims at supporting healthcare professionals to perform to their best ability and as a result to detect breast cancer as early as possible.
TURN YOUR CITY PINK! RAISE AWARENESS FOR BREAST CANCER Siemens started its new global campaign in October 2011: ‘Turn your city pink! Raise awareness for breast cancer’. The campaign will run for one year and aims to engage people globally in the topic of breast cancer. The goal is to encourage individuals to be creative and turn their city pink. Participants can then upload pictures or videos of their actions to the campaign website and share them with friends. Siemens will reward every entry with a donation of five U.S. dollars to charity. ■
