mother is referred to an obstetrician. Therefore, a midwife is a physician and should be paid the same. The variation of midwife salaries between different organisations, make the midwives migrate between these organisations and increase the depth of this problem. A school of midwifery is needed in the

UAE, as right now there are no national schools of midwifery supported by the UAE government. As I mentioned before, the first course for registered nurses to allow them to become midwives was at Dubai Women’s College and sponsored by the DHA (Dubai Health Authority). Another course is being launched in Abu Dhabi: The Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi is launching a training

programme to encourage UAE national women to get hands-on experience with the country’s new population. These are the only courses organised to meet the massive need for midwives; a permanent midwifery school would resolve this shortage. These are just a few issues, but if

improved, should result in promoting midwifery and improve the image of midwives, encouraging the young Emirati generation to join the midwifery field. Challenges in the midwifery profession continue to rise; midwives have had to face the dominance of obstetricians, the lack of intra-professional understanding between nurses and midwives, and many different concerns that are beyond the scope of this article.

conclusion Midwifery is the oldest profession in history. In the UAE, modern midwifery care is in the very early stages. Healthcare organisations are striving for midwives to guide low-risk pregnancies through pregnancy and birth as a normal event of life. In countries with the best pregnancy outcomes, midwives are the primary providers in caring for pregnant women. Introducing midwifery care to the young generation of the UAE is the key element of promoting this profession amongst Emiratis. ■
