For more than a generation this dark red rose was the “yardstick” that all new introductions would eventually be measured against. A tall, robust plant produces a myriad of richly perfumed deep crimson blooms that regularly appear on show tables where springs are short and warm. Blossoms tend to move toward blue as they ma- ture. It certainly belongs in the top ten all time favorites, particularly here in the U.S. Reasonably hardy.

MISS ALL-AMERICAN BEAUTY Hybrid Tea
(Var: MEIdaud) T e preferred name is the European one, Maria Callas, the opera singer, because it’s quicker to write and is indicative of the stature of the rose in bloom. Large, cupped, deep pink to light red blooms are borne on a tough, spreading plant with leathery dark green foliage that’s almost impervious to disease. A great rose for the nov- ice because it’s virtually indestructible and has a strong, old rose fragrance that everyone expects when they stick their nose in a bloom.

MICHELANGELO™ Hybrid Tea
(PPAF, Var: MEItelov, Gracious Queen) You may think this is an “English Rose”, but it’s actually something quite diff erent. Combine old-fashioned form with improved disease resistance and garden perfor- mance and you get a Romantica® rose. T ese large, cupped, buttery yellow blooms simply beg to be sniff ed, and their sweet lemon fragrance certainly won’t disappoint. Upright bushes clothed with dense, deep green foli- age are the perfect backdrop for the beautiful blooms, though the stems are perfect for cut fl ower arrange- ments as well. Grown own root.

MOONSTONE™ Hybrid Tea MIDAS TOUCH™ Hybrid Tea
(Plant Patent #8706, Var: JACrou) Brilliant, golden-yel- low blooms remain unfading right up to petal drop and seem to be showier because they are always borne on top of the plant. Vigorous, free branching, with shiny dark green foliage that really sets off the fl owers. Certainly no great shakes as a show rose, but it’s going to hang around for a long time because of its striking color, disease resistance and a hardiness that most roses this color don’t enjoy.

(Plant Patent #11384, Var: WEKcry- land, Cadillac DeVille) T is exhibition gem is a very large pure white that has a delicate pink edge on each petal giving it a fragile as porcelain look. But don’t be deceived because it has substance, form, and vigor – everything you want in a great show rose. T e plant is clothed in leathery, dark green foliage with strong upright stems. Will do best where the weather is hot.
