A Trip Back in Time at

the Castle Museum Once visited, never forgotten. This award winning museum is one of York’s star attractions. Step back in time as you wander down Kirkgate, the reconstructed Victorian street with its sights and sounds of 19th century Britain. Enjoy the huge collection of costumes, textiles, military and social history and see where highwayman, Dick Turpin was imprisoned before being hung on the Knavesmire.

“There’s a replica of my great grandfather’s brush workshop in the museum.”

“The Victorian street was one of the best attractions. I was captivated by the sounds, smells and sights. We still talk about it – amazing.”

“…a magical place, I feel like I’ve been transported back in time when I visit the cobbled street with its wonderful old shops. It’s very nostalgic.”

JORVIK and its

Famous Viking Festival This award winning attraction needs little introduction as its reputation seems to have captured the hearts of visitors since it opened in 1984. Time capsules whisk you back 1,000 years to an age when Vikings ruled the city. The animatronics are superb and children love the smells that waft from the buildings – the more revolting they are, the better!

Every February Norsemen move onto the streets in the guise of the Viking Festival. Battles rage, Viking food is consumed and visitors try their hands at different trades and crafts.

“Something for everyone – young and old also good disabled facilities.” “…the smells help you feel you are part of it.” “…an educational, ethereal and entertaining experience.” “Worth a visit even if you have little interest in history…”

A Scary Ghost Walk!

For a truly spooky experience, our famous ghost walks set off every evening from different points around the city. Join one for some lighthearted fun and an insight into the unexplainable.

“A really humorous and light sided look at York’s darker history…” “A great evening’s entertainment.”

“What an entertaining way to find out about the history of York!… very unique!”

Bettys Tea Room

“Beautiful decor, sublime food…” “Bettys epitomises York… traditional English charm and character”

“It was like entering a 1930s film set… waitresses in spotless white aprons, tea poured through a proper strainer”

“…and have you sampled Bettys delicious warm, buttered fat rascals?” 9
