Why York is so great for shopping…

It’s simple! We have a great mix of unique and independent shops and we’re a small, beautifully compact city. This means you can easily get across town from one fabulous boutique to another without any stress. Of course, we still have all the famous high street retailers as well as countless cafés, bistros

and wine bars where you can stop off and refuel. You could begin your retail therapy in the Minster Quarter where there are many gorgeous little shops packed into the labyrinth of streets that surround York’s iconic landmark. Stonegate and Shambles are two of the most famous places to wander and the architecture is inspiring. Walk a little further and discover Gillygate where you can delve into a host of individual shops selling everything from fashion to collectables and fun items. Make your way over the River Ouse and head for Micklegate, a lovely Georgian Street that sweeps up towards the Bar museum and takes you past eateries and boutiques. Call in to Bill Baber and try on some heavenly knitware. Amble along Fossgate which crosses the Foss and then becomes Walmgate and where you’ll find some great places to shop and eat.

Meander down Coney Street where all the popular, well known names can be found and then end your city centre spree in Coppergate which is built over a Viking city and is home to M&S Homestore, Fenwick, Topshop and lots more. If you’re still in the buying mood, go out of town to Monks Cross where lots of high street names can be found or, to get the designer look for less, go to the Designer Outlet where you’ll find top brands for up to 60% off.

Getting to the city is easy too. The railway station is just five minutes’ walk from all the main shops, there are numerous car parks and probably the best park and ride service in the UK.

Don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourself what a brilliant shopping experience we can offer.
