A Stroll on the City Walls
High above the tangle of ancient, bustling streets, you can soak up the city’s atmosphere in peace as you walk the city walls. Narrow steps disappear through medieval stonework at regular intervals enabling you to get off and on as you like. There’s around two miles to explore and lots of things to see that go undiscovered at ground level.
“It’s where my husband got down on one knee in the pouring rain and proposed to me! …the most romantic place in the world.”
“A great way of discovering hidden pubs that are off the tourist track!” “They encompass all that I love about York…”
“The walk around the walls gives you a wonderful perspective of this very special city, the best in England.”
An Awe-Inspiring Visit
to York Minster The largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, the iconic Minster rises above the city and can be seen from miles around. Immerse yourself in the beauty of this glorious church. Explore the undercroft or, if it’s a clear day and you’re feeling energetic, climb the 275 steps to the top of the tower for a spectacular view.
“Very simple. It has an atmosphere about it that is just not found in any other place.”
“York Minster is the heart of the city… It draws the eye as you approach by road and rail.”
“…the heart, soul and life of the city.” Exploring York’s Picturesque Streets
Laced with an assortment of streets and snickelways that loop their way around a fusion of varied architecture, every corner you turn provides a different vista. Petergate, Stonegate, Grape Lane, Swinegate, Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, their names all help to piece together the jigsaw that tells the city’s history. Shambles, probably one of the smallest but most visited streets is where medieval butchers traded. Being such a narrow thoroughfare meant the sun rarely warmed the meat, helping it to keep fresh a little longer.
“It is like a time machine taking us back to the olden days.” “There are very few places in the UK that are so individual these days…”
“…tea shops, the views at the end of each lane, the street theatre and atmosphere.”
“The wonky buildings, low ceilings, cobbles and beams. It’s been my favourite bit of York for years and always will be.”
National Railway Museum
Trains, trains and more trains interspersed with turntables, rolling stock, royal carriages, great food and exhibits to climb on. This world class museum is awesome, entry is free and it will enthral big kids as well as the little ones – if not more.

“THE place to go for people like us ‘who don’t do museums’ – absolutely the best day out.”
“The tour is a must, interesting, funny and informative, NEVER boring displays and the staff are warm and welcoming.”
“I can’t do it justice, please just visit it – enjoyed by all! Marvellous.”
