Plan Your Day

A family fun day in York Morning

Whether you’ve got tots or teens in tow, there’s always heaps to do.

Start your family day out with a visit to DIG, the ultra child-friendly experience that everyone can enjoy. Pick up a trowel and rediscover the Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds that archaeologists have uncovered under the streets of York. If this sparks an interest, head around the corner to its sister museum JORVIK and take a ride back in time to visit the Vikings.

Lunch

Stock up on some delicious goodies from one of York’s delightful delis and enjoy a picnic by the river, in Museum Gardens or Dean’s Park, taking in the magnificent views of the impressive Minster. If the weather’s not up to eating al fresco, try one of York’s family friendly cafés.

Afternoon

Take a trip to the award winning Yorkshire Museum. From pre-history to medieval times enjoy fantastic interactive galleries and audio visual shows.

If the family still has energy to spare, take a short trip to the outskirts of town to Creepy Crawlies, the indoor and outdoor adventure play park. A variety of slides, rides and a new eco-skating rink will entertain them and there’s plenty of refreshments available for recharging batteries.

Spoil yourself

Treat yourself to the very best in York with outstanding restaurants, indulgent spa treatments and much more.

Morning

Spend a few hours splashing some cash in York’s fantastic boutiques and high street stores.

Lunch

Discover one of the city’s outstanding restaurants or head for one of the traditional tearooms for a wicked pastry.

Afternoon

You’ve shopped, you’ve eaten, now put your feet up – or into water and try a unique fish foot spa treatment at Appy Feet in Coppergate. Take a pleasant walk to Swinegate and Nail Bar One for a stress-free manicure and polish – no need to book. If you dream of cosseting yourself for the entire afternoon, the spas at the sumptuous Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa in the city centre or at Middlethorpe Hall, an impressive 18th

century hotel just a few miles from the city centre, will rejuvenate the weariest of limbs.

Evening

Round off the day with a show at one of York’s theatres or, if you prefer, a visit to the cinema. Take a look to see what’s headlining at York Barbican, an impressive 1,500 seat entertainment venue. Complete your evening with a late supper, perhaps in Fossgate where there’s an eclectic mix of eateries or, for a waterside location, both Piccolino and the Living Room have restaurants overlooking the River Ouse.

Morning

Start your day with a visit to York Art Gallery which offers free admission and a fabulous collection of paintings, ceramics and sculptures. Just outside in Exhibition Square, meet up with one of York’s Voluntary Guides for a two hour tour. They are fun, informative and best of all they are free!

Call into Visit York’s Information Centre for bargain deals on attractions available when you purchase an all inclusive sightseeing pass. Friendly, efficient staff will give you hints and tips on how to experience the city without spending too many pennies.

Make sure you also include enough time to sample York’s abundance of street entertainers. From magicians to musicians they keep visitors enthralled every day of the week. Head to the Minster Quarter where many of York’s cafés and bars are situated and check out their lunch time meal deals.

Afternoon

Once you’ve satisfied your hunger, stroll along the banks of the River Ouse, explore the City Walls or stop off at Museum Gardens which houses the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, the medieval Hospitium and the Roman Multangular Tower – all of which can be enjoyed at no cost.

Finally, depart for the famous National Railway Museum where admission is free. This is the world’s largest museum of its kind displaying 300 years of railway history. Explore the giant hall and marvel at the superb engines and rolling stock – Duchess of Hamilton, Japanese Bullet Train and Royal Trains – they’re all here. And if there’s too much to see in one afternoon, just keep coming back.
