Right before Jim passed away he had just com- pleted his last book for Morning Sun Publica- tions. Jim had dug deeply into the history of Steamtown National Historic Site in Scran- ton, Penn., going back to the Steamtown U.S.A. days when the vast col-

lection of steam locomotives was first round- ed up in New England by F. Nelson Blount. The result was Steamtown in Color. Jim was always a meticulous researcher, and the Steamtown book took the reader (and the re- searcher) down some interesting side trails, including a history of the Electric City Trol- ley Museum that shares the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western yard in Scranton with the park service. Not only do you get a history of Steamtown in the book, but you get the other operations that Blount was involved with (such as Edaville in Mass- achusetts) as well as an unexpected visit to see Trolley Valhalla in New Jersey (a prede- cessor of the Electric City museum). Every time Jim received a new box of a

book he authored from a publisher he took the first one out of the box, marked it (ap- propriately enough) as “first out of the box” and autographed it. He loaned us his first copy for a review in R&R. Shortly thereafter, Jim passed away. His

she leave with the signed copy of Jim’s last book. Thus, we never got a proper review of the book in the magazine. Steamtown In Color is still available from Morning Sun Books. It will always have that bittersweet distinction of being the last book written by Jim. If you were a friend of Jim’s and want to relive some of his story telling, it’s a great way to look back. If you didn’t know Jim, pick up this book or his Illinois Central Monday Mornin’ Rails and spend some quality time trackside with the best friend a railfan ever had.

Along the Tracks 2011 If you headed trackside with your camera in 2011, whether it was for a major railfan event or quiet time along a short line, you may want to participate in what has be come a favorite annual feature here at R&R. Each year in the May issue, we run a special PHO- TO LINE featuring images taken during the preceding calendar year, and we invite you to submit photos for consideration in our Along the Rails 2011 feature. The photos can be of a newsworthy event (which you proba- bly should have submitted to RAILNEWS when it happened), a special excursion, or simply just a pretty picture. The only re- quirement is that it was taken in 2011 of a railroad subject (foreign subjects are fine). The guidelines for submitting are simple.

Each photographer can submit up to ten slides or digital photos (if you have access to a high-quality scanner, we strongly encour- age you to scan your slides and send us the digital files). Slides must be placed in a 20- slide storage page (send the entire page, even though only ten spaces will be used).
