flood in the museum’s history. Water in the car barns ran from as deep as six inches to more than two feet, with the outdoor water levels at 8.3 feet above mean sea level. Al- though all of the barns survived the storm, all but three cars were affected. More than 90 cars will be out of service until the motors are checked and repairs are done. A sub- stantial amount of washed out trackage will require some time before extensive opera- tions can begin again. Basic to the future is moving the museum to higher ground, and a capital campaign is underway. Many thanks to Gene Rambeau, Felix Pasternak, and Carl Edd for the news.
South Shore/NICTD Soldiers On With public money acting as the life blood of transportation services, it is no surprise to see that transportation and other public en- terprises are beginning to suffer. The state of Indiana once had an excellent support
program for pubic transport, but the 2011 General Assembly’s changes to the financial support method are likely to have done dam- age all over the Hoosier state. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District found itself with less state money than had been expected, and ridership and fare rev- enues are down, due in part to weak em- ployment in the Chicago Loop. To save money, NICTD eliminated the po-
sitions of station agent at the Gary and Hammond stations. Ticket vending ma- chines are available at stations and tickets can also be ordered by mail. Another saving will probably flow from shutting down ser- vice east of Dune Park on eight weekends in 2011 to complete installation of new cate- nary between Michigan City and South Bend. NICTD received an $800,000 grant to study the matter of taking the tracks out of the middle of 10th and 11th streets through downtown Michigan City; some members of

Tropical Storm Lee added several inches of rain in September to ground already saturated from record rainfalls and Hurricane Irene in August. The Norristown High Speed Line outside Philadelphia was affected by a washout between its Roberts Road and Garrett Hill stations, resulting in single-track service between Bryn Mawr (above) and Radnor. Temporary block stations were established at each end of the single track, as seen here on December 4, 2011. Regular service resumed on January 3, 2012. On a happier note, SEPTA operators decorated Kawasaki cars for the holidays, one based out of the Elmwood Depot and one based out of Callowhill. K-car 9104 is joined by PCC-2 No. 2322 at Elmwood on December 11, 2011; the PCC-2 was decorated for a charter by the Wilmington Chapter NRHS
