MAITLAND TOWER HO

Maitland Tower

Erie Crossing Shanty

Jim Boyd’s love of trains began at an early age. His mother Katy (a well-known aviation test pilot) shows Jim his first train, which was powered by a bunny (above). Almost as legendary as Jim was the Boydmobile, his Volkswagen Beetle. An empty piggyback flat and a convenient loading ramp made an opportunity that couldn’t be resisted in 1966 in Rock Falls, Ill. (below).

job, (expletive deleted)?” he said, poking his finger into my chest to make a point. That was Boyd! About all I could manage was a sheepish grin. We talked some more about some other projects he was working on be- fore it was time to see the first shows. That was August 2010, and I was already

doing part time work for Carstens on vari- ous projects. As summer slipped into fall, all of a sudden I found myself confronted with the opportunity to join the Carstens staff full time and work with Steve Barry and Walt Lankenau on RAILFAN & RAILROAD. Since I was young, I had always hoped for the opportunity to work for a railroad maga- zine! In the back of my mind, I was looking forward to getting feedback from the Editor Emeritus as we made tweaks and improve- ments to the venerable magazine. I was stunned when I got the phone call

from Steve Barry one evening telling me the news. How could a larger-than-life figure like Jim Boyd be gone? It was unimaginable. My first week at Carstens was tinged with

sadness as we came to terms with Jim Boyd’s untimely passing. Preparations were made for services, and we said our goodbyes. In the process, I got to meet Jim’s lovely sis- ter Barbara, who had a deep appreciation for her brother’s work, and was comforted by meeting so many people that he had influ- enced over the years. Boyd’s extensive slide collection has been preserved by our friends at White River Productions. Boyd’s spirit lives on through his published work, too. I’ve since added copies of Illinois Central: Mon- day Mornin’ Rails (1994) and Outbound Trains: In the Era Before Mergers (2005) to my personal library. They are both great in- sights not only into his photography but his deep-rooted passion for the art of railroad- ing. I’ve also been adding some of Boyd’s old columns and features to our web site at www.railfan.com/archives. It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since

his passing. . . But the far-reaching influ- ence of Jim Boyd won’t soon be forgotten. — OTTO M. VONDRAK

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included
