him, and just plain enjoyed life being around him. A few weeks later, as I began helping

with the almost overwhelming task of sorting through Jim’s 200,000 slides, I randomly happened across some of those very same slides that had so wowed and inspired me 47 years earli- er at a slide show at the model railroad club. I caught my breath — what are the odds? Their colors were still rich, and the portrayal of subject matter ever so dy- namic. I choked up a bit, and then paused and smiled. The slides symbol- ized Jim’s powerful legacy that so many of us were privileged to be a part of.

ABOVE LEFT: One winter's day in 1966, we picked up this Burlington way freight stopped on the Rock River bridge at Sterling, Illinois. While I shot the scene in a typical horizontal manner, Boyd went vertical and captured the stunning reflection. This experience taught us to think out our shots a little more carefully in the future. When I first saw this photo of my all-time favorite diesel, IC E6A No. 4001 ("the Ace"), racing into Rockford, Ill., with the Land O’ Corn on April 12, 1965, I was blown away. Jim had brought a still photo to life with the pan technique, and for months after, we were all doing pan shots. JIM BOYD PHOTO
