BY MIKE SCHAFER PHOTOS AS NOTED

FORTY-SEVEN YEARS HAVE passed since I first met Jim Boyd, but I still remember the occasion that Friday evening in 1964 at the For- est City Model Railroad Club in Rockford, Illinois, when Jim and his com- manding but affable pres- ence swept into the club room. The 22-year-old graduate of Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art & Photography had recently moved to Rockford from his nearby hometown of Dixon, Illinois, to take on a job as a newsroom film editor at local station WTVO’s stu- dio, and now he was out looking to meet new friends who shared his ob- session with railroading...

RAILFAN & RAILROAD founding editor Jim Boyd worked for his hometown Illinois Central for a little more than a year as a brakeman. On one occasion, Boyd caught one round trip as a baggage man on the Hawkeye between Chicago and Dubuque, Iowa. Mike Schafer captured this photo of Boyd posing in the doorway at Dubuque at 2:25 a.m. on a warm night in August 1970. MIKE SCHAFER PHOTO
