T e American Foundry Society (AFS) presented its


fi rst ever Technology Development Award to the U.S. Department of Automotive Materials Partnership-Auto- motive Metals Division (USAMP-AMD) and the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) on Aug. 11.


USAMP and USCAR were chosen for the award for


their “investment in metalcasting and for fostering and supporting research and technological development assist- ing in the advancement of metalcasting in the pursuit of lightweight component applications.” AFS Technical Services Vice President T omas Pru-


cha presented the award to current USAMP Chair Saad Abouzahr, head of organic materials engineering for the Chrysler Group. “USCAR and USAMP have invested in metalcasting


industry process development to help reduce the weight of automobiles through increased use of aluminum and magnesium cast components,” Prucha said. “T e indi- vidual members of the AMD board have each devoted a lot of time and eff ort to review and monitor these casting projects. T e Technology Development Award shows our appreciation to USAMP, USCAR and the AMD board members for these eff orts.”

Alfred Spada, director of marketing for the American Foundry Society, gave two presentations at the 2011 Australasian Foundry Confer- ence. Spada discussed the current state of global metalcasting and developing a metalcasting marketing plan. “The SWOT analysis is the key driver of a strong marketing plan for metalcasters,” Spada said. “It sets the foundation for your business.”
