EUROPEAN PCI COMMUNITY SHARES INSIGHT T

he organisation responsible for managing Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) recently celebrated an unprecedented turnout at its annual European meeting. The PCI Security Standards Council

(SSC) fourth European community meeting gathered more than 500 stakeholders, refl ecting record interest and participation from the region. It gathered feedback and discussion around the latest version of the PCI Standards and set the stage for increased participation in standards development for 2012.

The meeting also preceded the

offi cial feedback period for the three- year lifecycle of the PCI DSS and Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS), which began 1 November and gives participating organisations the opportunity to provide suggestions and commentary on the development of the next versions of the standards. In addition, input can now be submitted for the fi rst time through a new online tool designed to make feedback easier to supply. The Council said all feedback would be vetted and incorporated into discussion for the next iteration of the PCI Standards where appropriate.

Highlights at this

year’s meetings included the Council’s ongoing examinations of technologies in payments, including the recently released PCI point-to- point encryption solution requirements, as well as guidance on PA-DSS and mobile payments. There were also PCI insights

from leading merchants and PCI Board of Advisors members including British Airways, McDonald’s and Woolworths. Philip Morton, British Airways

information security and compliance manager, who recently became one of the 21 Participating Organisation representatives serving on the PCI SSC Board of Advisors, told Retail Technology: “The key, when it comes to new technologies like mobile, is to recognise the PCI standards around data are already there. We may want to improve customer service and speed up the boarding process with mobile boarding passes for example, but it is essential we make sure they can do so securely.” The meeting also enabled discussion around proposals for special interest groups (SIGs) on new topics that evaluate additional payment

processes and technology. In mid- November the council announced that close to 500 votes were cast by merchants, fi nancial institutions, service providers and associations for the initiatives they want to prioritise in the 2012 SIGs. The three elected groups will focus on cloud, e-commerce security and risk assessment. “This is our fi rst SIG election and I’m really pleased with the turnout, with a quarter of all of our Participating Organisations voting,” said Jeremy King, European director, PCI Security Standards Council. “Most impressively, a third of our votes came from outside North America, showing that involvement in the council’s activity and development of PCI Standards and resources to help secure the payment chain is truly a global endeavour.”
