OIA to offer industry insight from China at its 2012 conference
T
he OIA has secured a major keynote speaker for their 2012 conference - Roger Zeng, the
president and founder of China Outdoor Retailer Association (CORA). The two day gathering incorporates both the OIA
AGM and conference, and will be hosted by HF Holidays at Newfield Hall in Malhamdale. On 12 March, delegates will have the opportunity to try out a range of outdoor activities in the Malham area. Assorted sponsored athletes and guides from OIA members will be on hand to lead, encourage and instruct in rock climbing, bouldering, hill walking and mountain biking. The outdoor activities will be followed by the
OIA’s formal AGM, then networking and dinner. The conference will take place on the following day and will see a packed programme of speakers,
debates and interactive workshops, exploring in detail some of the opportunities and challenges that are facing the outdoor industries in the UK. Roger Zeng will address the conference,
providing delegates with an insight into the Chinese outdoor market, which is growing at over 35% a year and is already the sixth largest in the world. Andrew Denton, OIA chief executive, comments:
“The OIA is delighted to have persuaded Roger Zeng to speak at our annual conference. Roger offers a hugely valuable perspective on the state of the outdoor industry. China has gone from being the factory of the outdoor world to a dynamic and fast growing market opportunity. Meanwhile, China’s home grown brands are developing at an incredible pace and they will not stay at home indefinitely.”
Patagonia encourage customers to consume less
P
atagonia has established a partnership with customers to consume less as part of the
Common Threads Initiative in Europe. The initiative mutually pledges with customers to
buy and use clothes more sustainably and focuses on the 5 “rs” – reduce, repair, reuse, recycle and reimagine. In 2006, Patagonia was the first apparel brand to
ask consumers to recycle the Capilene baselayer, when the Common Threads Program was launched. Patagonia extend this year after year and are now taking back every garment and recycling what can be and keeping what can’t be recycled yet. Other initiatives from Patagonia include helping customers to reuse clothing. In the USA, they have
launched a new market place for customers to buy and sell used Patagonia gear. A similar partnership is currently being discussed for Europe. “The Common Threads Initiative addresses a
significant part of today’s environmental problem- the footprint of our stuff,” notes Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia’s Founder and Owner. “This initiative first asks customers to not buy
something if they don’t need it. If they do need it, we ask that they buy what will last a long time. And finally, recycle whatever is truly worn out. We are the first company to ask customers to take a formal pledge and be partners in the effort to reduce consumption and keep products out of the landfill or incinerator.”
