Products: Reviews MuleBar - Energy Bars

They say: “MuleBars give you energy. We can’t say it clearer than that. We use organic and Fairtrade ingredients wherever possible and are

committed to having all our products totally organic and Fairtrade as soon as the ingredients are available.”

GWA highlight: “Well,

I’ve been (not-so-scientifically) testing the 65g offerings throughout the year, mostly whilst out walking and on photo shoots – and I have to say, they are delicious. They look like very shiny flapjacks, but are not sticky to the touch; in taste tests, my good lady and I agreed that ‘chewy gooey’ is actually a pretty spot-on description. These bars are also surprisingly filling; just the job when you need that little ‘something’ to keep you going.” Summary: When your belly needs feeding whilst on the go, it makes sense to feed it good, clean food. Seriously, give these a go. MuleBar have done a great job in balancing great-tasting products with the ethics to support their core beliefs.

They say: “Stylish and innovative, the FlashPoint is perfect for general use and specifically designed for use in the outdoors whether it is climbing, hiking, camping, biking, etc. The SafeSpin open/close technology allows one to deploy the

blade without having to place their hand or fingers near the blade. The slide lock securely locks the blade open and closed for ultimate safety. As a bonus, this knife incorporates into the handle a bottle opener and carabineer clip.” GWA highlight: “By God it’s a pretty bit of gear. And it feels as good as it looks too. It’s heavy and reassuring, with a smooth action and a positive ‘click’. You open it up and your thumb rests on a ridged bump, and your forefinger sits in a protective valley.” GWA summary: Beautifully crafted, very sharp and great to hold. Perfect for keeping in an emergency lockbox, fishing tackle box or outdoor-worker’s toolkit, but for anyone not engaged in legally viable knife-work, it’s a no-no because it’s a lock knife. You could always keep it at home and whittle in your bedroom…

They say: “When applied well, technology should be simple. Such is the case with the innovative Fuel headlamp –

designed to meet the widest range of applications

while remaining small,

lightweight and robust. With all of the touch points of the product being considered, the Fuel’s smart design fulfills technology’s promise of actually making our lives easier.” GWA highlight: “The Princeton Tec Fuel is a low-cost light coming in at £24 which runs on three AAA batteries. It’s quite lightweight and inoffensive (78g and similar to an old 35mm film canister… remember those?), and small enough that it doesn’t feel unwieldy on your head. The wide elastic strap is comfortable, easily adjusted and holds it in place when you jump up and down to keep warm.” GWA summary: The Fuel is a very solidly made and comfortable light. It’s bright enough to walk or jog by - but a few things niggle at me. The button cycling through bright to dim strikes me as the wrong way around, and the battery compartment is a pain to open on the trail. That said, it does what it says it should very well and at a good price.

They say: “Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Ties have a tough rubber shell that provides excellent grip, a strong wire inside that holds its shape, and a range of bright colours to catch your eye! Gear Ties are available in six sizes (3", 6", 12", 18", 24" or 32") to organize nearly anything from a small cord or cable to large sporting goods equipment.” GWA highlight: “Unlike bungees, Gear Ties won’t ping up and take out your eye, or fray. They won’t leave a sticky residue like tape, and have no hard metal parts like ratchet straps, which means you can let them make contact with painted surfaces without worry.”

GWA summary: Tie stuff to other stuff without damaging it, or anything else. They are so fun and easy to use that a child could work them out in seconds. Say ‘good bye’ cable-ties and ‘hello’ gear ties.
