Products & applications Lift trucks ’Tis the season to put safety first
A supplier of short term hire lift trucks is advising companies to carry out a review of their health and safety policies and training methods so they can safely cope with an increase in demand during the run up to Christmas. Previous studies, carried out by Briggs Equipment, have shown that a sudden increase in workload can lead to a dis- proportionate increase in accidents involving forklift operators. Briggs believes that the surge in accidents could be driven by companies using temporary or agency drivers and therefore businesses should not ‘cut corners’ when training these staff during peak periods.
Sensor gives 15-minute low fuel alert
Workplace downtime due to fork- lift trucks running out of fuel could soon be a problem of the past thanks to a new, high-tech, fuel level sensing system avail- able on trucks produced by Yale Materials Handling.
In a bid to prevent a seasonal increase in accidents and to support the FLTA’s ‘Forklift Safety Week’ which took place in September, Briggs gave away free high visibility jackets with all its STH truck deliveries.

The Optical Fuel Level Sensor is an option on all of the com- pany’s Veracitor VX LPG trucks. It indicates when an LPG truck is beginning to run out of fuel. Tom Pickering, the company’s product strategy manager, says conventional systems can give as little as 30 seconds warning before trucks grind to a halt. “LPG is normally supplied to the engine in liquid form before
it is converted into gas vapour by the fuel system. When the LPG tank pressure drops below a cer- tain level, the sensor – which utilises optical refraction tech- nology – identifies the presence of gas vapour in the fuel lines, indicating low fuel.”
The new sensor gives up to 15 minutes warning of low fuel. Yale Materials Handling T: 01252 770700

Forklift series takes fuel efficiency to a new level New low level order pickers
Materials handling brand Hyster’s H2.0-3.5FT and H4.0-5.5FT Fortens series has been enhanced with ‘best in class’ fuel efficient technology. “The extensive Hyster testing programme suggests that the tough new Fortens is the most fuel efficient truck on the market for both diesel and LPG, with hybrids being the only exception,” claims Peter Madoc-Jones, product marketing manager.
“Uncertain fuel prices have led many forklift buyers to place fuel efficiency at the top of their list of importance. With the new Hyster Fortens, businesses will benefit with reduced fuel bills and produc- tivity higher than competitor models. We have combined fuel effi- ciency with tough and reliable operation and lowered the total cost of operation even further.”
Hyster has achieved the fuel savings in several ways including the introduction of an ECO-eLo setting which reduces the engine gov- erned speed by 20 per cent. A second setting, HiP, is also available for those businesses that require maximum performance, which cannot be switched by the driver in the cab, ensuring managers are in control of the fuel costs at all times. with compliance The creators of the UK’s only nationally agreed framework for the delivery of Thorough Examinations for forklift trucks has launched an
interactive online guide to help companies stay within the law. Designed to simplify and encourage legal compliance among fork truck users, the new Consolidated Fork Truck Services (CFTS) website hosts a num- ber of interactive tools.
Simon Emery chairman of CFTS explains: “Our site has been created with the needs of managers and super- visors in mind. We have created a range of web applications which answer the most common questions from users on the subject of Thorough Examinations. CFTS T: 01344 623800 Enter 366

Batteries save £250,000 annually Batteries and battery management
systems from Hoppecke Industrial Batteries have helped a UK builders’ merchant and home improvement retailer to save around £250,000 a year on the costs of running a fleet of counter- balance and reach trucks. In its distribution centres, the
Travis Perkins Group wanted to move away from using internal combustion (IC) engine trucks to electric machines, and as part of a £5m contract with Briggs Equipment were supplied with 57 counterbalance Yale trucks on a three-year contract. Hoppecke supplied trak air batteries, 52 high frequency chargers, five battery changing systems and five trak monitor call forward and manage- ment systems. This was all backed up by the company's Power for Life contract, which not only takes away any risks associated with managing batteries but is
claimed to dramatically improve their operation. Travis Perkins worked out that with the cost of the new trucks and their maintenance and fuel costs, it would save around £750,000 over the length of the contract. This includes the cost for Hoppecke to provide all bat- tery filling and maintenance as well as the battery changing equipment.

The latest range of low-level order pick- ing trucks from Toyota Material Handling, launched this month, is said to offer improved efficiency and design. The new series of low level order picking trucks have been designed with the operator in mind, allowing improvements in efficiency and pro- ductivity, plus a variety of options to suit specific applications. In addition the new trucks are equipped with a range of new features including: new powerful AC motor, improved lift abili- ties with sensi-lift control and a more durable design, built with a smooth operator concept. Sam Coles, commercial director of
Toyota Material Handling UK says: “The BT Optio L Series has a solution for every need – the new motor ensures high level acceleration and maximum travel speed; improved lift abilities on electric plat- form models; supplies smooth precise elevation due to sensi-lift control; and lowering is achieved by a foot pedal keeping hands free. The smooth operator concept puts ergonomics at the heart of the operation.” Toyota Material Handling T: 01977 711025
