Forklift manufacturer, Doosan, has been chosen as the preferred supplier of international construction materials group Saint-Gobain. One of the UK’s largest ever forklift deals will see the company supply over 2,000 counterbalance trucks across a variety of Saint- Gobain UK manufacturing, retail and merchant sites. These include the company’s Jewson, JP Corry and Gibbs and Dandy builders’ mer- chant networks. Doosan UK director and general manager, Tim Waples, believes the deal will cement the forklift company’s position in the UK and greatly raise the stature of the brand.

The British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) and City of Bristol College have joined forces to encour- age the continued availability of qualified engineers for the forklift truck industry, while also boosting awareness of engineering career opportunities. A BITA programme training manager has been appointed to create a management link between the academic community and the materials handling sector, which currently does not exist. This is an inde- pendent post with a brief to work with schools to attract new apprentices, explore opportunities for securing Government funding, manage the volume of applicants, liaise with employers and maintain qual- ity levels. Karl Baum, City of Bristol College’s busi- ness development manager in transport & engineering technology, will head up the operational team. Secondly, a new training facility, the BITA Academy, will be created. Apprentices pursuing the
College’s Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) accredited Diploma in FLT engineering will be able to graduate with a BITA-branded ‘IMI Quality Assured’ certificate. “We need to see significant
numbers of apprentices joining the forklift engineer- ing sector to replace retiring employees, if we want to reverse our current ageing profile,” commented Tim Waples, President of BITA. “That’s why we committed to create an Industry Apprentice Manager at our AGM in May 2011. Thanks to hard work by BITA Board member Bill Goodwin (pictured) who has led this project, we have negotiated a partnership with City of Bristol College that has met, and exceeded, our goals.”

Articulated truck firm invests in UK
With new products and orders flooding in, Bendi is ramping up its manufacturing in the UK creating new jobs in British built product. Boosted by the launch of a number of new models, 2011 is proving to be a big year for Bendi. Simon Brown, MD of Bendi said: “Using a Bendi can save the customer a significant amount of storage space which can free up more production area or make huge financial savings.” Over the past 10 years, Bendi has continued to manufacture in the UK, but like all articulated truck providers, was forced to outsource some production. Initially the cost benefits were appealing but Bendi realised that having control of UK manufactured product is essential, so with a bulging sales order book and international product costs rising, the decision was taken to bring home production to the UK. Bendi joint owner and director Paul Overfield said: “We have invested in buildings, machines and people to accommodate the new products and to allow for increasing volume in existing lines. To create even more skilled UK jobs has been very pleasing for everybody at Bendi.”

Lift truck powered by waste cooking oil
At its distribution centre at Brackmills, Northamptonshire, retailer John Lewis is turning waste cooking oil from its in-
store restaurants into eco- friendly biodiesel which it is using to power a Jungheinrich counterbalanced forklift truck. The oil is collected directly from shop stores by John Lewis’s own delivery vehicles and brought back to the Northampton DC where it undergoes the chem- ical process that makes it suitable for use as a fuel.

Success for Briggs
A year after signing an exclusive UK distribution deal with Yale, Briggs Equipment exceeded all its targets, including the retention of all its existing customers whilst making inroads into new markets. Briggs chief executive, Richard Close, said the strong strategic partnership had given the com- pany access to a much wider range of world-class products but its success in converting 100 per cent of its customers to Yale reflected something more fundamental. “The fact that we have not lost a single customer proves our cus- tomers are loyal to Briggs rather than a brand of truck,” he said. He added that in Yale, Briggs had found a partner that shared the same philosophy and the same goal of becoming leaders in the materials handling industry.
