Feature Lift trucks Telescopic lift trucks save time for recycler

By using a JCB Teletruk telescopic lift truck instead of a traditional counterbalance forklift, specialist recycler WasteCare is saving 40 minutes on each trailer at its Leeds headquarters. An average 15 to 18 trailers arrive for unloading and cross re-loading each day

his means a theoretical 10-12 hours is saved each day. In prac- tice the time saved is absorbed by a greater HGV throughput without the need to increase the size of the site. WasteCare estimates it is achieving a 40 per cent increase in site capacity. In this way JCB Teletruks are helping

WasteCare cope with incredible growth in business. The recycling and waste management company acquired 10 JCB TLT 25D Teletruks in June 2010 for use across its network of depots. Four of these 2.5 tonne diesel Teletruks have replaced seven traditional, masted counterbalance forklifts at WasteCare’s busy Leeds headquarters. Yard manager John Kell says:

“Working with JCB Teletruks is faster and safer. The JCBs have changed the way we work.” Kell adds: “We used to work with long fork extenders which are cumber- some and awkward to use especially with double deck trailers because you can’t see onto the top deck. With fork extenders it took two men and two forklifts to tip a 40ft trailer. Now it is one man, one forklift.

“Fork extenders don’t fit totally snug to the forks so you’ve always got some play and therefore some wobble

on the pallet. It’s not an easy job. But with the Teletruk we can see where the forks are at the top of a double decker. We’ve more control and therefore we suffer far less damage to IT equipment and monitors.”

Kell is also impressed by the for- wards fork tilt to near vertical, enabling pallets of waste to be tipped easily into high sided containers. Also, bins and cages of scrap IT equipment can be emptied into high sided con- tainers by means of a 360˚ rotator. Established in 1980, WasteCare offers a specialist WEEE recycling and waste management service to indus- trial and business sectors. Management

reporting tracks specialist IT equip- ment from collection to recovery after the secure wiping of hard drives, regardless of type, volume or location. Recyclable equipment is collected

by WasteCare and transported as required to the relevant specialist operation within the 14 regional depot network. The company’s sites act as regional collection and transfer sta- tions for onward transport as required through the network.

In addition to transferring materials on and off trailers, Leeds headquarters is home to the company’s specialist electrical and computer goods recycling facility. Incoming IT goods are trans- ferred into the secure store according to the WEEE Directive, as part of the com- pany’s branded WeeeCare operation. Approximately half of WasteCare’s 100 strong vehicle fleet, which ranges from vans with tail lifts through to artics with double decks, is based at the Leeds headquarters. Space on the site is restricted and curtainside trail- ers are now parked to allow access from one side only. With the variety of loads handled at Leeds, WasteCare has fitted the Teletruks with weight indicators. The Teletruks can reach straight inside WasteCare’s small vans equipped with tail lifts, where previously hand pallet trucks or counterbalance FLTs with fork extensions were used.

Enter 359 Pedestrian alert system reduces forklift truck injuries

ransmon Engineering has launched a Pedestrian Alert System to help reduce the number of pedestrian injuries caused by forklift trucks. Leicester based Transmon Engineering’s system utilises RFID technology. The device can be fitted to almost any forklift truck and detects the presence of a pedestrian, via an RFID active tag that should be worn by workers onsite at all times. The RFID active tags pulse a signal several times every second, activating the system when it enters the proximity detecting field (approximately seven metres from a forklift). A clear warning in the form of a beacon, buzzer or LED alerts the driver and pedestrian that they are close. Industry figures suggest more than 40 people are

injured each week by forklift trucks in the UK alone. These figures grow during busy peak periods when site pedestrian and driver activity increases. Paul Sercombe, of Transmon Engineering explains:

“Transmon’s Pedestrian Alert System helps reduce the risk of a forklift and pedestrian collision in any opera- tion, particularly when visitors are onsite or during busy times when temporary staff are employed.”

The Pedestrian Alert System is suited to loading and unloading areas, or for areas with limited visibility at intersections between pedestrians and forklift trucks or the exits from warehouse aisles. Sercombe says the system should not be consid-

ered a replacement for operation supervision. “The system requires the supervisor to take the responsibility to ensure that the RFID active tag key rings are worn by all pedestrians, at all times. Managers must also ensure that all elements of the system are in good working order and oversee battery management.” The system also offers a forced signal from the key fob to the truck at 25 metres, so that a pedestrian can make a driver aware from a greater distance, when appropriate. The RFID transmitters and receivers are powered by the truck battery supply and the active tags have an integral lithium battery supply which operates for a minimum of two years (depending on pulse time setting), after which they must be replaced under a maintenance schedule. To help managers assess the condition of the active tag key fobs, Transmon offers an optional fob

management system, which includes a battery life indi- cator system and software, helping to accurately inform the supervisor if any batteries need changing. Transmon has also introduced a similar system that warns pedestrians of a forklift’s presence in a specific area.
