Unison helps motorcycle land speed attempt Brammer awards

The tube bending machinery spe- cialist Unison is helping the Angelic Bulldog Project – an attempt on the world motorcycle land speed record – by creating the roll cage for the streamliner bike. Unison’s work included the manufacture of custom tooling to accommodate the unique shape of the bike, together with the bending of various tube sections on a precision all-electric bend- ing machine.

Former Manx GP racer Gabriel Uttley started the Angelic Bulldog Project in 1996. It has since grown to include a team of over 65 volunteers – many from prestigious engineering firms.

According to Gabriel Uttley,

“We knew of Unison’s excellent reputation in metalworking machinery and initially approached the company’s MD, Alan Pickering, for advice about the fabrication of the roll cage for the streamliner, because some of the bends are very application specific and we lacked the neces- sary resources. After some dis- cussion, during which it emerged that standard tooling wasn’t suit- able, Alan decided that the sim- plest way was for Unison to make the necessary tools and bend the cage’s components on one of its all-electric tube benders.” www.unisonltd.com

Bosch Technology Horizon Awards now open for entries

The Bosch Technology Horizons Award, which aims to help close the skills gap by encouraging young people to opt for a career in engineering is open for entries. The essay writing competition is split into two age groups with cash prizes for the winners and paid work placements at a Bosch site in the UK. In the 14-18 age group, the first prize is £700 and two weeks of work experience. In the 18-24 age group, the first prize is £1,000 and the opportunity to undertake a six months’ paid work placement at a Bosch site in the UK.

This year’s competition questions con- cern environmental technology and the

everyday lives and we want to encourage young people to have a similar vision and understand the beneficial impact of tech- nological innovation.” He continued: “Engineering is about

impact of engineering on the world of sport. Entries can be submitted online at www.bosch.co.uk/technologyhorizons/ and the closing date is 20th April 2012. Dr Peter Fouquet, President of Bosch in the UK (pictured) commented: “Robert Bosch had a vision to manufacture prod- ucts which would help people in their

problem solving, but the fact is that we have a shortage of engineers in the UK which must be addressed if we are to solve many of the critical problems we face, such as climate change. The Bosch Technology Horizons Award is designed to show young people that engineering can be a worthwhile career which can make an enormous contribution to society and economic performance.”

One of the largest manufacturing and engineering events of 2012 will be taking place at the NEC in Birmingham between 17 and 19 April. Drives and Controls Show, The Plant and Asset Management Exhibition, Air-Tech, and the International Fluid Power Exhibition (IFPEX) will form part of the manufacturing and engineering series of shows alongside MACH 2012. Organiser DFA Media believes its series of events ensures industry professionals will be able to gain the broadest insight concerning what industry solutions are currently available. The Plant and Asset Management Exhibition, being launched by DFA Media, is a new UK event for the mainte- nance sector, solely concerned with aspects of the management and maintenance of physical assets. Organisers are optimistic the Drives & Controls Show will exceed both the exhibitor and visitor numbers of 2010 which had 103 exhibitors, 16 per cent more than the previous show in 2008.

Factory Equipment NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011

The co-location of events attracted more than 8,600 visitors in 2010 and Ryan Fuller, exhibition sales director at DFA Media, believes this figure, along with visitor numbers will be exceeded as manufacturing regains confidence. Next year will include a free highly focused seminar programme. New for 2012 is the Energy and Safety seminar the- atre, sponsored by CompAir where themed panel discussions and seminar presentations will focus on key energy management topics. Also new is the Motion and Control Industry semi- nar theatre to include more technical workshop style presentations, with practical issues being discussed concerning the various sectors that makes up Drives and Controls Exhibition, Air-Tech, and IFPEX. The Plant and Asset Management Exhibition will also have two free seminar theatres. www.drives-expo.com, www.airtech-expo.com, www.ifpex-expo.com, maintenanceuk-expo.com
