region Maisha serves, only two children passed the exam. Today, with Maisha’s help, 35 children passed the test.

One of those children is Rooney, a former “street boy” who had to steal food in order to live until he was nine years old. That’s when a family from Edmond, Okla. provided him with a Mai- sha sponsorship. Now 14 years old, Rooney’s test scores rank among the top 10 children in his dis- trict. Williamson said Rooney once dreamed of surviving; now he dreams of becoming a pastor. Maisha is also raising the standard of entrepre- neurship in the country by creating income-gen- erating activities for youth and teenagers so they can be self-reliant fi nancially. In addition, the or- ganization has dug fi ve wells that have reduced the rate of diseases due to unsanitary water. Next month Maisha will build its fi rst medical clinic. However, there is still much to be done. “We are turning a lot of kids away, and that is not acceptable,” Williamson said. Still, Williamson is not to be deterred. Her face lit up with excitement when she said her goal is to have all 300 children left sponsored by December 18. Oklahoma Living has joined with the organiza- tion to sponsor the education for two of those children: Jeff John Omondi and Melany Nila Oching. Sid Sperry, director of public relations, communications and research, described Okla- homa Living’s investment in Maisha’s children. “One of the reasons we took interest in this or-

ganization is because of the emphasis they place on educating young people,” Sperry said. “To me, teaching young people how to change their culture so they can better benefi t others in their own country is what moves the next generation forward.”

Williamson said a school uniform and school supplies can empower a child to have a better fu- ture. She said this has been proven in her own life; because of Anna Larson, her dream of a better life became her reality.

“If it was not for her, I would be dead,” William- son said. “Now what she did for me is transform- ing lives of 400 more. The question is, how many more Beatrices are there in this program we don’t even know about yet?”
