transport modes and involving less expensive methods of shipment. Many of them are working longer and harder for less money – ie, margins have been hit – but the vast majority are surviving. We have to be patient. Things will of course get better and,

given that the air freight business is something of a barometer for wider economic trends, it is likely to recover sooner than the majority of other economic activities. As for when that recovery will begin, it’s all about consumer confidence.

The environment continues to be an issue that must be grappled with, for all links in the supply chain. Do you think that US cargo agents will come to terms with the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS)?

This is the most ridiculous thing to come down the road in a long time. AfA will work with other bodies – such as The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) – to fight ETS. The solution to the problem of carbon emissions does not lie in unilateral strategies and policies. All stakeholders should

come together, under the auspices of the global industry player ICAO.

Where do you stand on the question of moving lithium batteries by air?

The AfA is convinced that ICAO requirements on these goods are sufficiently robust already – it should simply be a question of better enforcing those requirements.

The ban on night-flying at Frankfurt-Main International airport imposed by a Hesse state court is likely to severely hit cargo operations at Germany’s busiest air freight gateway. Is it going to affect your members?

It could well have an impact on many US freight forwarders. Moreover, what sort of example does it set to other courts and regulatory bodies around the world? We’re very concerned about that and the longer term implications for cargo agents.
