We live in a rather throwaway culture. The technology of photography has changed more in the last 10 years than in the previous 100, and no-one would pretend that we should be happy with the picture quality of digital cameras of 5 years ago. But the tech- nology of camera bags is different. Yes, there are modern lightweight materials, and the sizing of bags has to reflect the cameras and lenses they are designed to fit. But fitness for purpose, ease of use, and durability are the most important qualities, which is why Billingham have made only modest changes to the basic design of their holdalls in nearly 40 years of production in the heart of the West Midlands.

Beyond purpose, there is style. Billingham materials age beautifully. Stiff clasps get easier with use; leather parts develop an attractive patina. They can always be mended – the writer has a 1978 Billingham still going strong. Go into any major supermarket and you’ll be offered a ‘bag for life’.
