Continuous lighting Tungsten
Most digital cameras have a standard white balance option which is designed for tungsten lamps’ 3200K colour tempera- ture (lower – more ‘yellow’ – than that of daylight), so they automatically compensate. By comparison, film cameras need an 80A or 80B blue filter. These lamps offer the twin benefits of daylight balanced 5000–6000K colour temperature and virtually no heat output, so they are ideal for subjects, still or living, which might be heat sen- sitive. Although the lamps are more costly, they have a long service life – up to 10,000 hours.
Flash lighting
Whilst continuous light and on- camera flash fulfil many lighting needs, studio flash heads still offer reliable, repeatable high power, action-stopping light, which is why they are still very popular. And they need not be bulky nor heavy either.
