Light meters Why buy a meter?

Today’s DSLRs incorporate highly sophisticat- ed multi-point meters, connected to comput- er algorithms which analyse and compare the data to hundreds of pre-set patterns. But there are still certain situations where a camera meter can be fooled – a bride’s dress in a dark church doorway being a classic example – and although shooting RAW gives you more of a chance to recover a poor exposed shot, it saves time to get it right in the first place. Secondly, using a meter for studio flash is an absolute essential. All the models shown here measure both flash and ambient light.
