IMAGE & EXPOSURE White balance


The traditional 18% grey card provides a theoreti- cal mid-point between black and white, and gives photographers a consistent reflected light reference for both exposure and white balance. Our synthetic washable Novoflex cards or the col- lapsible Lastolite Ezybalance are handy to have in your bag. However, there’s much debate as to whether cameras and meters are actually set up to measure 18% reflectance, and Nikon in partic- ular state that their cameras measure 12%, which is why there is now a 12% version of the Ezybalance. The best approach is to do some tests, and then compensate if necessary. The 18% grey does provide a useful midtone reference in Photoshop, so by including a shot with a grey card you can quickly set the white balance for a sequence of pictures. The Xpobalance takes this a stage further by giving highlight and shadow ref- erences as well.
