Puget Sound Sailing Championships - One Design At the end of each competitive sailing
season in the Pacific Northwest, sailors are treated to The Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle’s Puget Sound Sailing Championship. The PSSC is the premier championship series of the Puget Sound and takes place over two consecutive weekends. The first weekend, October 1 & 2, is dedicated to small boat One Design competition among some of the most competitive dinghy, skiff and keelboat classes in the nation. Set among the inshore waters of Shilshole Bay, the racing offered unique tidal conditions and trying wind conditions. Six diverse fleets and as many as
55 boats gathered Saturday morning bringing to life the docks near the CYC clubhouse. The fleets that gathered for this years PSSC One Design included the 505, Laser, Snipe, Tasar, Cal 20, and the largest fleet comprised of the J24. Growing in steady numbers over the past few years, the J/24 fleet is the Pacific Northwest’s largest and most active One Design keelboat fleet. Day one of the PSSC One Design
would see moderate winds that built as the day progressed. The CYC race committee work diligently to manage as many races as possible on Saturday knowing that Sunday’s wind conditions could be light. The five boat 505 fleet would have four races. The fight for the last podium position came down to a tie between Lee Laney’s 505 Mancation and Bruce Vandeventer’s 505 Time Machine. Lee Laney would finish 2nd in race three earning the tie breaker for the podium. In the diminutive but capable Cal 20, five boats would sail three races over the weekend. Having an RAF after the first race, Joe Petrich would sail boat for boat against fellow Tacoma Yacht Club sailor Jon Thompson to earn 2nd for the weekend. Thirteen Lasers would sail the most races of all the fleets. After five races Kurt Hoehne would lead the Laser fleet for the weekend, followed closely by Mike Johnson and Carlso Ambisambra. The classic Snipe fleet with four boats would sail four closely matched races. Katia Smith aboard Mindracer would out-sail her competition for first place in the Snipe fleet. The Tasar, a very savvy fleet, would race a total of four races.
Karas aboard Honey Badger would
take first place followed closely by Cathy Sherwood’s Maplesugar. The last podium spot in the Tasar fleet would go to Charles Asper’s Serenity Now! who won the tie against Glen Stellmacher’s hull number 811. With nineteen boats, the J24 fleet would sail four very competitive races. With the top twelve boats exchanging constant course position throughout the day, Harry Dursch’s Self Abuse would sail the most consistent to take 1st pace for the weekend. In second would be Mark Laura’s Windhaven followed with only one point difference by Hans Spiller’s ….and your little dog, too! Day two would have even lighter
breeze and a strong ebbing current. Under overcast skies and a sprinkle of rain, the fleets clustered near the race committee in preparation for the days racing. With a delayed start, the fleets waited while the winds subtly built to a steady northerly and the days racing began. Each fleet started as sunshine filled the sky and the breeze waned. The single race held on Sunday overran the time limit and most boats retired for the day. The PSSC One Design served as a
fitting end to the Puget Sound small boat racing season. As the last sailboat was hauled out on Sunday; a season of camaraderie, fun and great sailing flashed by with a smile
