Letters “What? You guys sail all year ‘round?”
The above comment comes as no surprise to anyone talking with sailors on the east coast, where they haul their boats for the winter and think about next year’s sailing season.
Many Northwest sailors don’t hibernate when the winter months come around. Although it may look like we’ve put on a layer of fat, it’s actually just layers of fleece and waterproof everything. We may look like Teletubbies, but we’re toasty inside. Of course, with the winter weather comes not just the challenge of keeping warm and dry, but keeping the boat upright during, what can be, some “exhilarating” winds. With that in mind, this month’s Sailing Tips article reviews reefing systems and procedures. Most everyone has some sort of reefing system on their boat, but, unfortunately, very few practice before they actually need it, which could be too late. Take a few minutes in lighter winds to make sure all the lines are run correctly and that you and your crew know how use them. A few minutes of practice can turn a potentially uncomfortable, even dangerous and scary situation, into nothing more than a routine sail adjustment. Sailing in these frosty conditions, however, isn’t for everyone. For those of you who will be leaving your boat unattended for any length of time, you’ll find the article, “If You Must Winterize,” will give you some important to do’s before leaving your boat on its own at the dock.
For all, check your lines, it’s wintertime!
Some Video Fun: To help get a little frost off the pumpkin, take a look at this fun video, shot by Kevin Huetink last summer. Is that a tropical island in the middle of Lake Union? Just click on link at
