EDITOR’S LETTER
Hot ’n’ cold
Thousands of us attempted the great British bbq in our back gardens this summer. This saw us fend of rain, beg for sunshine and insist it’s not (that) cold. Despite our wishful thinking, it’s fair to say our longed for Indian summer fell fl at. Enough is enough, now I’ve got my coat out, my boots back on and I’m ready to face up to the cold. But it’s not just weather that’s been blowing hot and cold. Last year saw us emerge from recession and things started looking up, yet now, the markets are battling against a Eurozone debt crisis, which threatens to suck the rest of us in, and George Osborne has said “recovery will be choppy”. So what does this mean for L&D? If
organisations are feeling wobbly, this places leadership, talent management and the need for fully trained staff fi rmly back on the agenda. Andy Dickson reveals how emerging from the cold can, in fact, have a positive effect on businesses, giving them a new sense of awakening (page 9). Phil Hawthorn, too, discusses what role L&D will play in recovery, whether we face a double dip or not (pages 12 & 13). We also speak to head of talent development
operations for Sky, Kenny Henderson, about the revolutionary e-learning methods implemented at the organisation, helping to get employees fully trained and part of the work force in record speed. If the current climate means organisations must tighten their resources, Scott Hobbs advises on the line manager’s role in talent management and retention (pages 21 & 22). To ensure you are equipped with bringing
your organisation forward, a visit to The World of Learning Conference & Exhibition on 27 & 28 September at the NEC will put you on track. The show brings together all the leading thought in L&D and is host to a range of new product launches, new learning practices and free seminars. You can register to attend at
