being able to position what we can do and how it adds value in that context.” A perhaps more controversial idea was to remove L&D from the umbrella of HR. Anecdotally, some delegates felt lumped in as a subset of a subset being positioned on the peripheral rather than being a central cog in the future direction of an organisation. Solution possibilities began to straddle more than one problem arena. ‘Engagement’ provided a quick and dirty link between proving worth in the bottom line as well as in the people sense. Speaking the language of all stakeholders may seem common sense, but still needs to be constantly addressed. Jargon is endemic in all professions. There is a need to use the clients terms and language (whether internal or external clients). In that way, it might be more possible to engage all the staff to drive exceptional performance. End users and ‘coal face’ personnel could drive conversations about the most appropriate key performance indicators.


There was a concern flowing from this that most L&D concentrated on ‘managers and leaders’. Yes, there was agreement on the need to develop at that level, to carry out their responsibilities effectively. Mike Muir, L&D Manager of Mencap, went further: “We need to ask ourselves, what about the staff below manager level? They may be faced with just mandatory or pure functional training without the same opportunities to realise their true abilities. Talent management programmes may well be addressing this to some extent, but I still think this area of untapped potential remains untapped until there is generally a slight change of focus for learning and development.”Extending this idea to include businesses getting more involved in education to inform young students about relevant life skills could help to complete the circle. Mike Crabbe of ATIL saw a central role for BILD in both lobbying and acting as a conduit for this. n
