Trans Tech Set to Offer Full-Production, All-Electric Type-A School Bus By Shane Kite


The Trans Tech Bus facility in Warwick, NY will be the birthplace of the company’s first electric Type-A school bus. The company will build the eTrans electric bus side-by-side with its conventional buses.

rans Tech Bus will unveil later this month what is ex- pected to be the nation’s first-ever full-production, factory-made, all-electric Type-A school bus. Te new “eTrans” bus combines Trans Tech’s Type-


A body with Smith Electric Vehicles’ all-electric, zero-emissions “Newton” chassis powered by Smith’s new, proprietary drive- train. Te bus will make its debut via two prototypes, including a “ride-and-drive” model on display at the NAPT annual trade show in Cincinnati on Oct. 23. Full-scale production of the eTrans is slated to start in mid- to late-2012, but a pilot program will launch early next year, in

which select customers will receive eTrans buses to test, though neither company would say how many. Te new drivetrain will power the pilot vehicles and the full-production buses, accord- ing to Scott Carson, Smith’s national sales director, while the two prototypes will have an electric drive from Enova, Smith’s origi- nal supplier. Te eTrans is being built via an exclusive, years-long contract between Trans Tech and Smith, the duration of which neither would specify. Te cutaway chassis and cabs produced at Smith’s Kansas City
