Hoist Sheave Keeps Mining Equipment’s Bouncing in Check
Cast Component: Fleeting hoist sheave. Material: 1045 steel (fl ame hardened). Process: Nobake.
Application: Surface mining.
Converted From: Machined forging. Casting Supplier: Spokane Industries, Spokane, Wash. Customer: P&H Mining Equipment, Milwaukee.
• A sheave is used to control the frequent bouncing of a large diameter wire rope, which is used to raise and lower the dipper of an electric shovel. Bouncing weakens the rope over time, and the sheave extends the rope’s life by controlling it. If the rope were to break, the entire dipper, its support arms and pay- load would crash to the ground.
• By fl ame hardening the rope groove and adding a removable bearing, the metalcasting facility and P&H Mining Equipment were able to extend the sheave’s service life.
• The 1,697-lb. fi nished casting resulted in a savings of $4,753.72 per part and a machining reduction of more than 70%.
