New Exhaust Manifold Cuts Emissions on Pleasure Boats
Cast Component: V8 6-L exhaust manifold. Material: Class 30 gray iron. Process: Green sand.
Application: Water jacketed exhaust manifold and catalytic converter housing.
Casting Supplier: Benton Foundry Inc., Benton, Pa.
Customer: Ilmor Marine LLC, Plymouth, Mich.
• The gray iron casting is 86 lbs. and measures approximately 17.5 x 17 x 7.5 in. with 0.25-inch walls.
• With this design, a boat’s catalytic converter is more stable and protected. It allows the customer to route the water jackets externally from the manifold to the water-discharge adapter. The catalytic convert- er is used to convert exhaust emissions from an engine into nontoxic substances.
• The design and automated moldmaking allowed for sig- nifi cant piece-price savings, according to the customer.
