Feature Warehousing & storage Racking maximises warehouse space
When Leicester based Tedwood UK was deciding on a manufacturer to supply it with a top of the range warehouse storage system for Direct Heating Systems’ (DHS) new warehouse in Lancashire, it had no hesitation in awarding the business to PSS
O
ne of the UK’s leading providers of pallet racking and shelving solutions, PSS was able to pro- vide Tedwood UK with the quality products and flexible approach needed to meet the demands of fitting out a modern, busy warehouse. “We have a longstanding relation- ship with PSS, and although we went out to tender, the company was able to provide us with the most competitive quote, a guaranteed service and quality products”, says Rod Wood, director, Tedwood UK.
Located in Chorley, the new ware- house for DHS is their second facility in the area and has been prepared for the company’s busy season, which runs from October to April. The company, part of the BSS Group, is a nationwide distributor to plumbers’ merchants, of boiler spares for all major boiler manu- facturers. The new warehouse, manned with a total of 24 office and warehouse personnel, will provide storage for goods-in and bulk storage prior to prod- uct being transferred to DHS’ main warehouse for despatch. Once Tedwood UK had drawn up the profile requirements for the vari- ous product sizes and weights to be accommodated PSS’s technical team began calculating beam lengths and weight loadings for the different prod- uct groups. Seven rows of pallet rack-

ing, including four double rows, have been installed together with slated wood shelving, to enable ease of pallet placement. In addition two rows of PSS’s Shelfplan longspan shelving, designed to store bulky loads or small parts, has been installed under the mezzanine floor upon which the offices are situated.
The racking system, which accom- modates 1,000 pallet locations, has been designed with wider than normal aisles to allow forklift truck drivers to have more space to manoeuvre quickly, whilst the Shelfplan longspan shelving, allows access from both sides, thereby enabling safe, easy and fast hand picking. In addition Tedwood also supplied a half row of workbenches made from PSS racking and safety wire mesh backing for a half-row of racking located alongside the benches, to prevent products being pushed through the racking. “PSS was efficient, worked in syn- ergy with Tedwood Storage Systems
and responded quickly to all demands,” says Karl Pearson, operations manager at DHS. “When we needed some addi- tional racking I thought we would have to wait for several weeks but instead the racking arrived the next day.” PSS’s adjustable pallet racking allows any damaged part of a frame to be replaced without renewing the complete frame. Beams are available in a wide range of profiles to meet the load requirements of almost any appli- cation. The patented locking action of the beam to upright provides positive location whilst offering easy adjust- ments in increments of 75mm and come complete with beam locking keys. PSS’s Longspan shelving offers virtually unlimited opportunities to expand a company’s storage capacity, by providing higher density storage and greater flexibility whether storing boxes, cartons, tubes or wires.

WMS reduces picking time for Stan Robinson by 25 per cent L
ogistics solutions provider, Stan Robinson, has imple- mented a new Warehouse Management System (WMS)
from Solarsoft to automate its business processes and reduce the amount of time it takes to pick items by 25 per cent - the equivalent of two hours per user each day. Before implementing the Solarsoft solution, Stan Robinson was operating almost entirely via paper-based systems, Excel spreadsheets and manual processes. However, when one of the company’s largest customers advised that it was mov- ing onto the Solarsoft WMS, Stan Robinson decided it too would switch to a more efficient, automated solution in order to integrate with the customer and improve its business processes. Richard Baxter, IT manager at Stan Robinson explains: “The decision to partner with Solarsoft came when a key customer of ours implemented Solarsoft’s WMS and wanted to create a real-time stock movement link with our business. However,
Materials Handling & Logistics SEPTEMBER 2011
as the majority of our processes were paper-based, it made business sense for us to implement the new Solarsoft system in order to integrate with our customer and improve our operations at the same time.”
Since the Solarsoft system went live in November 2010,
Stan Robinson has benefited from increased productivity, better efficiency and more accurate traceability of stock and pallets. Baxter continues, “The new system allows us to track everything in real time which is a huge benefit to us as a business, but is also a key advantage for our customers.
Using the system we are able to see exactly what has been picked and when, and this information is fed straight back to the customer in real-time. This means that they too can see when that load has been picked, when it’s in transit, when it has been delivered and also when we haven’t got enough stock and so require a delivery. Solarsoft
