New battery rental service

‘Power Gap’ offers managers of materials handling equipment fleets the opportunity to bridge any gap they may have in their energy requirements without a major investment in capital equipment. Power Gap is designed for certain peak times of the year, such as the run up to Christmas, when customers need to increase their battery fleet. Alternatively, they may have reached the end of a long term lease contract but do not wish to take on the commitment of another long term contract at that point in time. In such instances Power Gap can provide be the ideal flexible solution. Power Gap gives customers the reassurance that they are getting a reliable product supported by the backup of the UK’s largest motive battery provider. A package can be tailored to the customer’s exact requirements who is then charged a fixed weekly cost – helping with planning and cash flow as assets are not tied up in capital equipment.

NB Industrial Power (formerly know as Exide) has launched a new traction battery rental solution;

products, which have been designed to withstand the toughest operating conditions, can be found in hall 5 on stand 5D111 at the event being held in Aberdeen during 6th – 8th September 2011. The company motto of ‘tough enough’ can be confidently applied to their exhibits which include a Profi 50 TI hoist which is a hook suspended, super versatile tool with a 50 tonne payload performance. This is being shown together with an EH 25 hoist recently added to their range, which is overhead rail mounted and suitable for 25 tonne lifts. This product was purpose designed for BOP handling and many other oil and gas applications. Both products offer the benefits of 25% less air consumption, lubrication-free, low component count and less maintenance with reduced noise operating levels. The Profi hoist has no protruding parts to minimise snagging during operation, while the EH 25 can be supplied with an optional offshore corrosion protection package. Both products are air operated but can also be supplied for hydraulic operation and control. All products are suitable for operation where low headroom conditions exist and are Ex rated for hazardous area operations.

Eliminate rocking slabs with the CoGri Joint Stabiliser

he CoGri Group has acquired exclusive European distribution rights for the patented SD7 Joint Saver, which will be marketed as the CoGri Joint Stabiliser and managed by CG Flooring Systems Ltd. The CoGri Joint Stabiliser (CJS) is a fast, cost-effective method for eliminating rocking slabs.

T CJS is a split aluminium cylinder (3” diameter, 7” long) containing a screw and wedge torque mechanism.

When inserted between two slabs and expanded the pressure provides the interlock needed to restore load transfer and virtually eliminates harmful slab movement. The spring-like mechanism allows it to expand and contract with the slab as it undergoes normal slab movement due to temperature changes. This gives users year after year of superior performance. CJS comes in different sizes, 200mm, 175mm and 150mm depending on the slab depths. Main benefits of CJS include restoring positive load transfer at joints; CJS is a quick, clean and easy cost effective solution with minimal disruption to the clients operation; once installed the floor can be used immediately. Compared to other methods to correct rocking slabs, CJS is less disruptive and requires less warehouse downtime. The CJS system costs less than full-depth joint replacement and is usually cheaper than retrofit dowels or subslab grout injection.

hen the UK’s largest medical device company, Smith and Nephew, needed to urgently install a powered pallet conveyor system at its Wound Management headquarters in Hull it called in Leicester based materials handling specialist, CI Logistics.

Pallet conveyor system from CI Logistics bridges the gap at Smith and Nephew W

Quite apart from the tight timescales on the project, the contract was far from straightforward. Smith and Nephew’s sterile products are packed into caged pallets with a plastic base and these needed to be transported from a mezzanine in the company’s factory on one side of a busy road to its packing and warehouse operation on the other side of the road. Once emptied, the cages then needed to be returned to the factory for the whole operation to begin again. The company already had an existing conveyor system which transported the cages across the road via a link bridge. The conveyor had been installed over 20 years ago and then mothballed for almost a decade due to changes in the company’s manufacturing techniques. As part of the materials handling contract, this legacy system would need to be resurrected and incorporated into a new, fully automated solution.

A practical solution built to a high standard Andrew Marris is the Asset Care manager for Smith and Nephew, he comments, “We opened up a new production facility here in Hull and as part of cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) we took the decision to remove the secondary packaging operation out of our ultra-clean manufacturing facility into our distribution centre. “Moving our secondary packing operation into our warehouse and close to the point of despatch, meant we were

transporting 120 pallet cages a day back and forth from manufacturing to warehouse across a public highway. As a result we decided to resurrect the concept of our old conveyor which ran through a link bridge. The company which had installed this system no longer existed so it was necessary to put the job out to tender. “Our decision to use CI Logistics was based on the fact that we were confident that they could install a new system that would be trouble-free and operational from day one. Cost was important to us but it was reliability which was the primary factor in our decision. “We supplied CI with a comprehensive user requirement specification which outlined exactly what we were looking for, including our production rates. timescales required.

They came up with technical solutions to all of our problems within the tight From concept to order placement was a process of eight weeks with a three month build and

install period. None of this was an issue to CI Logistics; they designed an extremely practical solution which could be delivered in the right timescale and at the right cost. “The conveyor solution has now been up and running reliably 24 hours a day for the last three months,” concludes

Marris. CI Logistics

“It has enabled us to streamline our operation and reduce transport costs; we are also able to keep our products inside a controlled environment all the way from production to despatch.”
