Online supermarket Ocado has acquired a 2.3-acre site on the White Horse Business Park in Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire. The 43,000 sq ft site, including warehouse and office space, will be used as a regional distribution ‘spoke’ facilitating 10,000 orders per week, and create up to 170 new jobs. It will operate 65 vans at peak capacity and serve existing delivery geography.

S4 Logistics industry takes a bow at Awards
Companies and individuals across the warehousing and third party logistics (3PL) sectors were rewarded for excellence at UKWA’s Annual Awards for Warehousing 2011 at London’s Dorchester Hotel. The Association received a record number of entries in all categories. Roger Williams, UKWA CEO said: “UKWA’s Awards are established as sym- bols of achievement in the 3PL sector and empha- sise the importance of logistics within today’s economy. The high number and quality of the entries we received underlines the professionalism that runs through the modern logistics industry.” A total of 10 awards were presented and the win- ners were: Customer Service Award: Expect Distribution; Environment Award: Elddis Transport; Training Award: DHL Supply Chain; Warehouse Manager of the Year: Paul Wilson, Century Logistics; Technology/Innovation Award: Linde

Outgoing United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) chairman Derrick Potter has called on logistics industry companies to increase their investment in training if the sector is to avoid a skills shortage. Speaking at the UKWA’s AGM, Potter said: “With an ageing workforce and a perception among those cur- rently in education that logistics does not offer an attractive career path, the sector may well find itself facing a skills shortage. One of UKWA’s key objectives will be to encourage members to engage with the Sector Skills Council for our industry – Skills for Logistics – to develop logistics related apprenticeship schemes that will attract Government funding.”
New Volkswagen fleet fuels efficiency
A van centre in Taunton has risen to the fuel efficiency challenge after securing a £600,000 deal with a forklift truck supplier. Still UK, the provider of material handling equipment and warehouse solutions, has taken delivery of a fleet of Volkswagen Transporters from Taunton Van Centre, as part of its drive to reduce fuel consumption. The Volkswagen T5 vans are to be used by Still’s network of field
engineers who manage the service and maintenance contracts of its forklift and warehouse trucks. Said to be powerful and fuel efficient, the engines were key reasons why Still turned to Volkswagen vans, Steve Howell, Still’s logistics manager said. “The Volkswagen Transporters comfortably met our require- ments and the Taunton team ensured a smooth transition.”

Tesco trial new lithium-ion pallet truck
The first lithium-ion powered pallet to be commercially available in the world – the Jungheinrich EJE112i powered pallet truck – has been purchased and is being trialled by Tesco.
The new truck will shortly be in operation at one of the retailer’s main distribution centres. Richard Ash, Tesco’s corporate purchasing manager, com- mented: “Tesco is taking up the environmental challenge and is striving to reduce carbon emissions across the busi- ness. With its low energy consumption, we believe the Jungheinrich EJE 112i truck could play a signifi-
cant role in helping to reduce CO2 emissions across our materials handling fleet.”

New hire trucks to save thousands
A leading European manufacturer of dry pet food is set to save thou- sands of pounds during a major expansion programme thanks to a new flexible hire agreement with Briggs Equipment.
Briggs will supply 34 new Yale counterbalance machines as part of a five-year Flexihire contract to Golden Acres. With plans in place to double in size over the next 10 years, Golden Acres needed an agree- ment that enabled it to alter its fleet to match its growth.
