New comfort features in bump cap Scott Safety has launched First Base 3, the third generation of its Protector First Base bump cap, for those working in head bump-risk occupations such as manufacturing and maintenance in the aerospace and automotive sectors among others.
First Base 3 is a baseball-style bump cap said to deliver comfort, style and protection and is approved to the latest EN812 standard, incorporating amendment A1. Specifically selected fabrics are said to help to reduce humidity and heat build up, a big factor in user discom- fort. The sweatband; constructed from a wicking fabric, draws mois- ture away from the skin and the shell design, with micro-perforated sides and indirect top ventilation, improves air circulation. The shell design is said to provide stability and comfort and enhances protection as it extends further down the rear of the head. Scalloping over the ear, the shell allows improved compatibility with hearing protection and eyewear and flexes to fit a wide range of head sizes. Scott Safety

Industry gets a
helping hand A marked increase in sales of skin pro- tectants, gloves and other PPE products has been the result of a three-year ‘It’s In Your Hands’ campaign lauched in 2007 by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) together with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Safety Groups UK, the British Occupational Hygiene Society, the Institute of Occupational Medicine and the TUC. The aim was to reduce the incidence of work-related dermatitis over a three- year period by 20 per cent. This was because every year, thousands of peo- ple suffer from work-related dermatitis which causes both unnecessary pain and discomfort and in many cases forces the individual to give up work. The campaign was designed to embrace any supply, training or employer company to generate greater awareness of work-related dermatitis. In addition to the efforts of the HSE and BSIF members, some 60 major industrial companies signed up to the campaign, providing a welcome help- ing hand to promote the cause. David Lummis, BSIF CEO says: “We
are able to see a marked increase in the sales of skin protectants, gloves and other PPE products. The sales of these products have increased disproportion- ally against other safety products over the three-year period the campaign has been in effect.” BSIF T: 01745 585600

Noise exposure device wins RoSPA award
The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has awarded its 2011 Product Innovation Award to the Howard Leight QuietDose in-ear dosimeter. The award, which is designed to recognise new and innovative products that contribute to improvements in occupational safety and health, was presented at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Gala Dinner held during Safety and Health Expo 2011.
QuietDose is a personal dosimeter that measures and records a worker’s in-ear exposure to noise, and is considered a major advance towards stopping the pro- gression of occupational hearing loss and ensuring employer compliance with hearing safety regulations.
“We are committed to providing a more holistic approach to occupational hearing loss prevention,” says Ian Shepherd, Hearing National Product Sales Manager for Honeywell Safety Products in the UK. “We are honoured to be recognised by the British Safety Industry for QuietDose.” Honeywell Safety Products

Make sure your hand protection is up to standard
that although injuries to hands are not usually fatal, they can seriously affect a sufferer’s way of life and ability to work and in many instances these injuries could have been prevented if the worker had been wearing suit- able, high-performing gloves that met the required EN standards for hand protection. To show its resolution against counterfeit and illegal products, Polyco became a founding member of the British Safety Industry Federation’s (BSIF) Registered Safety Suppliers Scheme in 2009. Following com- pliance with a strict set of crite- ria, Polyco is able to use the scheme shield to identify its organisation and products as ‘genuine and safe’. Additionally,
with its onsite testing facility, Polyco also retests its gloves at the point of distribution, ensuring quality control.
Sarah Bridge, deputy MD at BM Polyco, says: “At Polyco we believe in the importance of prod- uct development and that PPE should be designed and created for the comfort and protection of the end user. We provide a huge range of gloves for a number of different applications and indus- tries that are innovative, comfort- able and most importantly offer quality protection against hazards such as chemicals and micro- organisms, mechanical, cold and thermal risks.” BM Polyco T: 020 8443 9000

on/off convenience. Storm flaps provide extra protection, while seamless shoulder and sleeve tops provide comfort and fewer entry points for contaminants. Further options include protec- tion against certain biohazards and nuclear particles, as well as anti-static properties and resis- tance to alcohol through a spe- cialist fabric coating. For comfort and ease of movement, the designs incorporate extra mater- ial in the arms and legs and some models feature knitted cuffs and an elasticated waist and ankles. 3M T: 0870 60 800 60
