Do you expect your way of creating artwork to change in the future?
I expect that the way I create art will adjust to match the evolving technology. If contemporary artists continue to utilize needlecraft as much as they have over the last 10 years, I think there can only be more experimentation of fusion with other media. The way machines are constructed and their marriage with technology can also inform the way an artist works, so needlecraft trends are definitely influenced by the sewing/embroidery industry itself. I think most of what we define as “future trends” are simply remixed combinations of already existing ideas, but perhaps exemplified with newer technology.
Do you embrace the changes in the art industry regarding social media and technology influences?
Yes, I am a huge advocate of all things digital. The world—especially the art world — has become far smaller in the last 10 years because of social media. Galleries, artists, museums are all more accessible. I joke with my academic colleagues, “How did people teach art before YouTube?”
Do you like art? Do you have any preferences for an artist? And/or for creators of artistic work? (Creators can also be chefs, designers, photographers, fashion designers or inventors.)
Maurizio Cattelan, Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger, Francesca Woodman, Joel-Peter Witkin, Banksy... the list continues to grow and become more diverse.
I’m fascinated by popular culture, especially when it involves young women scrutinized and shaped by the media. However, I am continually inspired by artists who are not afraid to confront and challenge the viewer.
Do you aspire to collaborate in your creations with an artist from another artistic discipline?
Creating art, for me, is a personal endeavor. If I were to collaborate with another artist, I think it would probably be someone in my close circle of artist friends.
Do you have any dreams for the future?
I think most of my dreams for the future are to have the means to continue what I am doing — exhibit my work, make the work I want to make, and to be able to do both of those on my own terms. That would be ideal.
