Jacob van Rijs Comic Museum

The Museum will become a new focal point on the less-populated southern side of Qiantang River. The CCAM will consolidate the city’s leading position as China’s capital of the animation industry. The new Museum will be the icon of a larger development, the Comic and Animation Center.

Jacob van Rijs (born in Amsterdam in 1964) is one of the cofounding directors of MVRDV, a Rotterdam, Netherlands-based architecture and urban design practice founded in 1991. In 1990, van Rijs graduated from the Technical University of Delft with a degree in architecture (with honors). His scope of work ranges from small-scale interventions to large-scale housing projects and urban planning. Current projects include the Olympiakwartier in Almere, Netherlands; the Eco- City in Logroño, Spain; and a number of large-scale housing projects in India and South Korea. In the past, he has completed the TEDA housing in Tianjin, a high- density housing project that experimented with a mix of low-rise and high-rise and made place for traditional Chinese housing typologies, as well as supported local lifestyle.

Currently, van Rijs is working on the House of Culture and Movement, a cultural center in Frederiksberg, Denmark. The building will be a new typology that includes a community center, exhibition and performance, playground, park and health center. Its aim is to engage the population of Frederiksberg in a healthy and active lifestyle.
