could still struggle to find further opportunities to extend your practical and academic knowledge, through taking a masters degree, for example. Bath University, for example, is now one of few to offer a range of further courses for those interested in the field, such as an MSc in the Conservation of Historic Buildings. Without suitable undergraduate and postgraduate degrees individuals will not gain the knowledge and support they need to help ensure that the future conservation of our heritage continues. Without this knowledge we are in danger of losing an essential part of our past.


THERE has been a great deal of talk over the past few years about the importance of the historic environment and the need to protect all our historic assets. To that end there has been a greater focus on training in the traditional crafts skills such as stonemasonry, thatching, etc. This is for the good. But there has been little focus on the local management of heritage projects, and a general assumption that architects should take overall responsibility for conservation work. to be very little public understanding of heritage conservation management as a discipline, but this lack of awareness of conservation management is also evident among trades and professions. Greater understanding of the vital work of conservation management professionals would be to everyone’s great benefit. 
