SPABseeksitsfirstDirector

AT the Society’s 2011AGM, held on 1 July at the Mansion House in the City of London, the Society’s Secretary, Philip Venning, announced that he will be retiring at the SPAB’s nextAGM, to be held in Manchester on 23 June 2012. Philip has served as Secretary since 1984, and

has raised the status of the Society immeasurably under his wise and tireless direction. However, he has not retired yet; the celebration of his achievements will follow. The Society’s Executive Committee has

decided that, in order to ensure a smooth transition, we will seek to appoint his successor before the end of this calendar year. The advertisement for the post is reproduced

below, and will also appear elsewhere as part of an external recruitment process. Philip’s successor will be called Director,

rather than Secretary. For a Society so concerned with continuity, this may sound like a big change, but it will bring us into line with other National Amenity Societies (with whom we work closely), and prevent confusion with the title of Company Secretary (which exists in other organisations). The Society has grown in every way since

1984. It is now a charity incorporated as a company limited by guarantee, and is supported by you, our members. We employ eight full-time, and 18 part-time, staff – though a large part of our work is undertaken by volunteers.

The new appointee will be pivotal to SPAB’s

future success, and will be responsible for the development and implementation of the recommendations of our recent strategic review. But, equally, our new Director must be entirely sympathetic and conversant with our philosophy of repair (not restoration), set beside high-quality contemporary design (not pastiche). I hope that in the next edition of Cornerstone,

due in November, we will be able to confirm the choice of our new Director.

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS

DIRECTOR Location: London

Salary: Competitive

Job type: Permanent (full-time) Sector: Heritage

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the highly

destructive “restoration” of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today we are the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage; it is a role which is further enhanced through our statutory role as adviser to local planning authorities.

We advise. We educate. We campaign. We offer help when itʼs needed and informed resistance when we are alarmed. We encourage excellence in new design to enrich and complement the historic environment.

Following the recent announcement that our highly respected Secretary will be retiring at the Societyʼs AGM in June 2012,

the Society seeks to recruit a new senior officer, to be called Director, who will be pivotal to SPABʼs future success and who will be responsible for the development and implementation of the recommendations of our recent strategic review.

We seek to appoint a Director who shares our determination and brings the skills and expertise required to succeed in this role. It will certainly be a challenging and stimulating role, and we are sure that a high performing individual who has both the drive and the will to succeed will enjoy the challenge in enabling us to achieve our plans.

Whatever your background, you will possess the intellectual breadth to be successful in the role, have an engaging

personality and a flexible approach. In addition, you will have the ability to work independently and as part of a small team, and come with a track record of success in your field.

If you are interested in this significant opportunity and would like to discuss it further in detail, please contact our advising consultant, Philip Nelson, on 020 7691 1920 for an initial discussion.
