Semiconductors Shrinking package grows consumer demand

Designed tomatch the trend forminiaturisation in high-performance consumer products such as mobile devices, NXP Semiconductors introduces amediumpower transistor and N-channel trenchmosfet housed in a leadless DFN2020-6 (SOT1118) plastic packagemeasuring two by twomillimetres with a height of 0.65mm.

By integrating a low VCE(sat) BISS transistor

and trenchmosfet into one product, the PBSM5240PF saves space on the PCB, while delivering high electrical performance. It boasts a reduction in footprint ofmore than 50 per

cent and a decrease in package height ofmore than 10 per cent. Also, because the package incorporates a heat sink, the device is said to deliver 25 per cent improved thermal performance, with currents up to 2.0A and less power consumption.

As such, the device can be used as part of the

charging circuit in portable batteries for cell phones,MP3 players or other portable devices.

Plug and play touch screen solutions

Microchip announces the mTouch AR1100 analogue resistive USB touch-screen controller. The device is available as a turnkey chip or board product, supporting all four, five and eight-wire touch screens, with free drivers for most major operating systems. It provides a drop-in touch controller for purchasers to universally support an entire standard resistive-touch portfolio.

As the emerging standard for

user interfaces, resistive touch provides finger, glove or stylus inputs for applications such as medical devices, industrial controls, handwriting or signature capture and other touch-inputmechanisms. The AR1100 touch-screen controller combines this, in a single-chip solution, with USB plug and play. The controller also features advanced calibration options for alignment and linearisation, enhancing accuracy for critical applications with tight board spacing.

The newAR1100 is available in

20-pin SOIC, SSOP andQFN packages and as a board product. A development kit, priced at $89.99, is also available.
