CEMSourcing

Building on The BaSicS

Engaging with a new CEMpartner is daunting, but some things are essential to all buyers: product quality and reliable supply

Establishing a relationship with a new CEMpartner can seemlike a minefield, acknowledging that there is both risk and reward in any decision that ismade. Each of the stakeholders in the decisionmaking process will expect the CEMto enhance a particular element of the supply chain, but the one factor that all parties are agreed on is that the CEMmust deliver both quality of product and reliability of supply to the buyer. This is the foundation of any supply relationship.

Backed by over 40 years experience

of working with customers in industries that demand high reliability product performance, DSEi-exhibitor, EMS Manufacturing is well aware of these demands. As such, the company has developed a range of quality control tools that drive consistently high levels of conformance through each stage of the manufacturing process.

Test traceability

Themost significant of these tools is the facility to provide 100 per cent test performance traceability. In-house developed software systems integrate with EMSManufacturing's ERP systemto provide a level of control for small tomediumbatches that is normally associated with higher volume production. Indeed, with the ability to provide fullmaterial and test performance traceability froman individual PCB assembly onwards, EMS aims to provide 100 per cent confidence in product conformance.

An ongoing commitment to achieving consistently high levels of

quality control is shown in the range of approvals that the company holds. EMS is certified to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 13485:2003 and ISO 14001:2004. It also boasts industry specific factory process control approvals.

Focussing on quality foundations is only part of the story however, and EMS also operates a flexible planning and production control process that allows the company to respond to customer demand.

The EMS supply chain has been continually

refined so that the company can blend batch specific procurement expertise with the supply chainmechanisms that are vital for longer term projects. Continual development ofmaterial control systems, for example, allows EMS to feed real time communication onmaterial usage and demand levels back into the supply base. This helps maintain a high level of visibility that is vital to ongoing supply.

Short lead times

Quality is an inbuilt part of every process with EMSManufacturing

Allmanufacturing systems at EMS have been built with process quality and flexibility as key capabilities for a number of years. The successful implementation of fast changeover and fast response methods on the production shop floor, for example, has been

translated into reduced lead times to customer demands. Operating to consistent standards has been fundamental to this philosophy, which has been supported with a blend of external and internal training for employees.

Perhaps themost important factor is that the flexibility and

capability offered by EMSManufacturing is designed to complement the strengths of its OEMcustomer base, many of whomoperate in high reliability and demanding industries.
