hristine Heinz, DVM, was in the middle of a staff meeting when someone burst into the room with frightening news from her son’s day care. Her 7-month-old was said to be running a fever


of 106°F.


“I panicked and started to cry,” the first-time mom recalls. “The other doctors said, ‘Go! Go! You need to get over there right now!’” Heinz raced out the door and, less than a minute later, was comforting her baby in her arms. “Jack was sick, but his fever was 100.6°F,” she says. “The panic quickly went away, and I was able to calm down.” Having on-site day care has paid unexpected dividends to Heinz and the rest of staff at Broad Ripple Animal Wellness Center in Indianapolis, Ind. “If I had to drive clear across town, there probably would


have been an accident,” she admits. “Either that or I would have been involved in a high-speed police chase.” With unprecedented numbers of women entering the vet-


erinary work force, almost all practices are looking for ways to balance their needs with those of their new moms returning after giving birth. Last year, Broad Ripple Animal Wellness Center purchased a neighbor’s house, intending to use the land for future expan- sion. In the meantime, the owners of the practice planned to fix up the property and rent it out. After several new mothers
