Binpin stops wheelie bin theft S
cots engineer and inventor William “Willie” Munro has devised an ingenious device which will help prevent theft, loss and damage to wheelie bins. Called the BinPin, it is a robust, flexible metal core with lockable collars at each end which can secure two wheelie bins together making them more difficult to steal or vandalise and helps prevent them toppling over in high winds.
The idea was born out of William’s frustration at seeing bins abandoned or vandalised. He said: “Millions of pounds are lost each year by local authorities through wheelie bins being lost or stolen. Moreover, there are the costs of clean up when waste spills out of the bins due to extreme weather conditions or being set on fire by vandals. I thought there must be a solution and came up with the BinPin”
Willie developed a prototype device which he took to Glasgow-based product design consultancy, Meso Design. Meso refined the design and brought the product to the stage where it is ready to go into commercial production.
The connector can either be used to link two bins together or to attach the bin securely to a wall bracket. In addition, multiple bins can be secured by daisy-chaining BinPins. When the bin is to be emptied it is a simple operation to unlock one end of the rod and it swings around to attach to the single bin. Willie added: “The theft and vandalism of wheelie bins is a major headache for local authorities and householders alike. We have even heard of many cases where burglars are using bins as a platform to climb into houses and the bin is then used to take away the stolen goods. The BinPin will help prevent this and other misuses of wheelie bins.
Bin Pin retails at £29.99 and is available to purchase on-line from

Wilkinson Sword brand supported by major marketing push for 2012
W
ilkinson Sword is planning a major marketing push for 2012 to reinforce its position as a leading brand in the UK garden tools sector. The brand is part of the E P Barrus portfolio of garden products that also includes WOLF-Garten. The money will be spent on new Wilkinson Sword packaging, trade and consumer exhibitions, improved point of sale merchandising, on-line marketing, social media and public relations. There is also an active new product development programme. E P Barrus is well-known for the strength of the operational support it offers its customers in both meeting product supply quotas and service levels. These are both key areas in any brand-building campaign. Consumers have always held Wilkinson Sword in high regard but changes in ownership have taken the focus away. Barrus has concentrated on refining the range and positioning it as a premium product for both experienced gardeners and more style conscious newcomers seeking a recognisable brand with a heritage of quality.
“Over the last year we have significantly increased distribution and sales. Other brands may outspend us but we enjoy a huge advantage because retailers and consumers both have genuine affection for the iconic Wilkinson Sword range of garden products and associate the name very closely with secateurs and other cutting products.
“Our aim is to capitalise on this goodwill and restore our position as one of the UK’s market leaders,” says Nick Hills, Lawn & Garden Division general manager at E P Barrus.
