Feature 2 | OFFSHORE SUPPORT VESSELS PSV design takes effi ciency to a new level

A Wärtsilä-designed platform supply vessel (PSV) for Vestland Off shore is set to be one of the most cost and fuel-effi cient designs on the market.

T

he order was placed by Norwegian shipyard Hellesøy Verſt and covers the supply of

ship design and

equipment for the vessel. T e PSV, based on the VS 485 design, represents the yard’s fi rst order for the new Mk III design. Arne Stenersen, managing director,

Wärtsilä Ship Design Norway AS, says that the remit for Wärtsilä Ship Design was to create “a new benchmark for energy efficient PSVs, [with] safe operation, modern design with highest comfort, a large PSV with 1000m2

deck area [that

is] compact and [has] fl exible under-deck cargo capacities.” T e new 85m, Mk III hull is designed

for greater energy efficiency over its predecessor, with a corresponding reduction in emissions. According to Stenersen, the key areas in improving a vessel’s energy effi ciency are the hull form, the bow and bulb design, and aſt -ship optimisation for maximum propulsion effi ciency. Superior reliability and availability of the VS 485 Mk III design is demonstrated

the highest possible levels of redundancy and reliability and a highly-efficient confi guration for all operational situations. LLC also improves the effi ciency of a diesel- electric propulsion system.” Stenersen notes that traditional

Low Loss Concept T e PSV will be fi tted with four Wärtsilä 9L20 diesel generator sets, electric propulsion system, power management system, and an integrated automation system and ‘NOx Reducer’. The vessel’s power and propulsion system is based on the company’s patented Low Loss Concept (LLC). Stenersen describes LLC as “a true four-split solution in power and propulsion; the vessel’s ability to maintain its position and carry out normal operations under specific weather conditions in different failure modes is signifi cantly improved. For the customer, this means a vessel which has

confi gurations consist of several propulsion units, each with their own genset and drive system consisting of a heavy and space-consuming propulsion transformer, frequency converter for speed control, shaſt line and propeller system. In Wärtsilä’s LLC solution, propulsion transformers are eliminated and replaced by one or two LLC transformers in a central location. Each transformer becomes part of

the

switchboard unit and controls several propulsion units. “As power from the gensets is applied directly to the speed-controlling frequency converters, system efficiency is increased by 2-4% and current levels supplied to frequency converters from the switchboard are reduced by some 10%.” Benefi ts of LLC are that it is easier and

less expensive to install, unnecessary utility systems (e.g HVAC) are avoided, it adds redundancy, and the resulting improvement in overall efficiency leads to significant fuel savings. Fuel efficiency in certain operational modes is improved by a double- digit percentage, adds Stenersen. The vessel is designed for worldwide

operations and is scheduled for delivery towards the end of 2012. SBI
