and boat operators an all-in-one hub for voice, and broadband data services, to bolster both ship operations and crew calling programmes. The solution will also come to incorporate voice over IP (VoIP) services in the near future. Physically, the solution consists of a box solution,
which can be wall- or rack-mounted onboard the vessel, enabling the user to access a dedicated web portal from which they can manage their corporate networks, including local area networks and intranets for administration and crew. The platform is compatible with all satcomms connectivity services, such as Iridium, VSAT, Pharostar and Inmarsat. Features include a budget control unit and split
billing capabilities, enabling the owner to break down each type of traffic emanating from the vessel, instead of merely studying a single invoice at the end of each month – as with hotel internet access, users are required to log into the main network, and the operator can draw up a complete history of usage. Similar benefits include crew access management
controls and content / infotainment controls. Te latter feature enables crew to access internet, video and MP3s for leisure purposes, as well as allowing
the operator to disseminate info from shore-to-ship; for instance, sending crew rotas and operational information, which can be stored in a ‘local library’ folder within the intranet, as well as effecting soſtware updates for Windows and specialist shipping applications. Te platform also alerts the operator if the crew are using too much data, curbing the risk of excessive costs. Existing Vizada customers will also be able to
integrate the group’s range of solutions, including the SkyFile Mail email access service, and Universal Card prepaid crew calling capabilities, onto Vizada Xchange. Demand for increased access to communications
and internet is set to grow, according to Erik Cueppens, Vizada chief executive. Presenting the Vizada Xchange solution at its
launch in May 2011, Cueppens said: “Approximately 60,000 vessels are fitted with satcomms terminals at present, and this figure is set to increase to 90,000 within the next decade. Broadband penetration within the marine market
is at the 30% mark but we predict that broadband connectivity will rise to more than 80% by 2020.”
