Four new Camarc pilot boats are unveiled this year, spanning shipyards from the UK to Brazil and Australia, and built for four separate customers.


K boat designer Camarc has been specialising in pilot boats for international shipbuilders for some

time now, but this year sees the deliveries of four Camarc sisterships, built at four separate yards for four different customers. Te vessels comprise an extension of the existing Camarc 16m alloy pilot boat design, comprising a propeller-driven craſt designed to handle a speed range of between 20-28knots. Te first two craſt of the quartet, which were

launched in June this year, were constructed by Alnmaritec, at its Blyth yard, and by Woody Marine, of Melbourne, Australia. Each boat features a twin Caterpillar C18 installation, driving through Twin Disc gearboxes, with the engines rated at 526kW at 2100rpm. Camarc director Alastair Cameron tells

is to retain upwards visibility; with the development of bonded frameless window systems, we were able to reduce the window support mullions to a minimum, resulting in minimal blind spots.” The Alnmaritec-built pilot boat was

constructed on behalf of salvage specialist Svitzer, and will be placed on a long-term charter contract in West Africa. Cameron says: “On trials, the Alnmaritec boat achieved 27knots with half fuel and 12 persons, comfortably over her contract speed of 25knots. The double chine hull design exhibited good stability and was dry running in the 1-1.5m seas encountered, with no need to use the wipers, regardless of heading.” He adds that much of Camarc’s work has gone into “improving propulsive efficiency, which translates into lower fuel costs for operators.”

Fender protection Te remaining two pilot boats are currently being built at Supmar in São Paolo and Birdon Marine in Australia. Camarc has confirmed that the Birdon-built vessel is bound for operation by an as yet unspecified Australian port authority, on the country’s east coast. Te aluminium structure for all four

craft was designed in line with class society Lloyd’s Register’s SSC Rules. Each vessel structure features deep frames forward in the boarding area and a deep vertical fender strake with a key, allowing


for the addition of Camarc’s inhouse-built POPSURE fender system. POPSURE was developed by Camarc in

the late 1990s as a safeguard against the regular knocks that a pilot boat sustains during its working life. Functioning by spreading impact loads over as large an area as possible, the fender system features a tough, high-density Polyethylene continuous tube and, through the large section, up to 750mm deep, a combination of Polyurethane and memory foam, for further shock absorption. Cameron explains: “Depending on

boat size, the Polyethylene tube will vary in diameter; from 150mm on a 16m boat, up to 280mm on a 19m craſt. POPSURE is not a low capital cost solution but the reduction in structural wear and tear is marked and offsets the original investment – operators are still using the original tube aſter 10 years of service. “In the event of repair and/or replacement,

this is made possible by welding in a new section of tube, or repair of minor damage to the carrier module, or, ultimately, replacement of them.” Although primarily intended for installation

on Camarc-designed vessels, the group licenses a smaller version of the POPSURE system for use by lighter duty craſt. Camarc now intends to create a 310mm diameter tube version of POPSURE for larger vessels. SBI
