Propulsion ZF pod drives for


Pearl 75 yacht ZF Services UK and ZF Marine have cooperated to supply two ZF POD 4000 drives to a 23m loa luxury yacht, currently under construction at UK-based Pearl Motor Yachts Limited. The pod drives will be coupled with MTU 8V2000M94 diesel engines, each generating just under 920kW, to create the integrated propulsion and steering system for the Pearl 75 class newbuild, and granting the vessel a cruising speed of up to 25knots and a top speed of 30knots. Te ZF POD 4000 drives incorporate ZF’s SmartCommand control and Joystick Manoeuvring System (JMS). When used in conjunc- tion with trolling valves for proportional speed control, the JMS enables the operator to handle all ZF POD manoeuvring functions, including sideways tracking and turning on the spot, via one hand. ZF Services UK claims that this flexibility will also enable the operator to sail without crew, if preferred. The pod drive series comprises a conventional


transmission mounted to a steerable pod unit, which is equipped with twin counter-rotating propellers. ZF Services UK estimates that this set-up can result in a 15% increase in speed, compared to conventional shaſt-line systems, and a 20% decrease in fuel consumption when operating at cruising speed. www.zf.com/uk

lucky number Volvo Penta chose May’s Nor-Shipping event to unveil its new 4-stroke D13 MH diesel engine, formulated specifically for medium and heavy-duty marine commercial applications. Te IMO Tier III-compliant engine has a dry weight of 1450kg, six in-line cylinders, bore/stroke values of 131/158mm and a 13litre capacity. Built to suit a number of operational requirements, the D13 MH has been made available as five separate models, with power outputs ranging from 295-440kW. Building on the group’s D12 engine, Volvo Penta has

sculpted the D13 MH to reduce levels of NOx emissions and to eliminate visible smoke, thereby satisifying the terms of the forthcoming IMO regulations for emissions control areas. Tis has been accomplished by the inclusion of the engine’s twin-entry turbo, with waste gate, which offers pulse charging with high charge air pressure directly from a low volume of rpm.
